I am revising my theme using the 8.01 files. In this process I test using my 'special' members I created to fill usergroup positions. As I open each one and some havent been opened for a loooong time I am greeted with a huge string of CHAT REQUESTS from who knows how long ago. Would there be a way to create an expiration time for requests, say a month or two old?

Thanks for that friendly. I've been meaning to raise the issue for some time now, but keep getting sidetracked.

I fully support this idea. I would go even further and kill off the request after 30 minutes. If somebody hasn't responded in that time, they either don't want to chat, or it is a strong possibility they've left the site.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Yes I agree that users on and requesting chat don't wait around for months!!!
so a 30 minute limit is way reasonable in my mind too.

Are we talking about the private topics that get sent out (or configured notification type in v8)?

If so, that's effectively a mailer system, so it wouldn't be so trivial to after-the-fact delete the topics for it. It could be done, but it'd just require some conceptual rethought.

Maybe the members should just have the chat notifications set to email?

Or am I misunderstanding?

Potentially along the line a new notification method might need adding, called something like "instant personal alert", which puts a notification up on someone's phone notification API, or the one Mac OS Mountain Lion is going to have (and Microsoft will need to copy).

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

No, that isn't MY point, I'll let friendly answer for himself.

My reference is to the popup notifications that appear when one member invites another to 'chat', but tends not to go never goes away when there is no response to the invitation, and continues to popup each time the invited member logs in, unless he or she manually acknowledges (deletes) it.

That is not something that I would cross the road for, but if you think it is an essential adjunct to the social media phenomenon, I'm sure nothing I say can be considered relevant!

Yes, for me it is the invitation to chat notifications that appear as Fletch describes. I would like them to just die after so many minutes if the requested member didn't respond or at least an option to allow that to happen.
