We got this problem earlier in a version. But also 9.0.4 has this problem (to me at least) Look at this screenshot for what I mean…
I know that people can use proxy servers, but they don't all come from one provider..

I can confirm that, Harry. I also seem to remember something about the asterisks being worked on (Bob, I think), but can't remember whether this was supposed to be incorporated as a 'fix' for future releases.

I have been getting around this by using NirSoft's IPNetInfo and replacing the asterisk with a 0 (ZERO), but I agree it would be a lot more seamless if I could do it within ocPortal.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

We had this before, and Chris has made a fix for it, but now we got this again. Maby Chris can answer this.

Stats addon still installed, and "Stats retention time" not set to 0/blank?

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Yes, instead of just blank – that was the change I posted. Unknown basically means something like RSS, something that isn't a normal ocPortal screen.

What site is this? I'll see if I can work out why *'s are showing.

Fletch - I noticed you're reading this topic, so I checked your site and you have the same issue. Mind if I debug on there?

This is one of those things that is hard to debug without real live users, and ocPortal.com is running an older version for now still.

Okay, I've found the main cause of this.

The users online tool is basically a dump of the sessions. Sessions don't store IP addresses in full, but we made it so that it looks up the full IP address from the stats log if it is available.

You have 'Do not log bot hits' enabled, and these are mostly bot hits.

Two more possible causes:
  • If a request stopped short for some reason (e.g. ocPortal thought it was blocking a spammer), and there's no other successful request
  • If a request is directly to an iframe, e.g. scrolling through search results, and there's no other request to the page containing the iframe

If you are curious about the full IP, you can usually find it in the raw server logs. I did in this case.

I am going to add a feature where you can make it hold sessions to the full IP addresses. I'm not sure if that is a good idea or not, but it'll be an option. It is not matched to full IP addresses because sometimes (at least in the past), machines have IP addresses that jump around a bit, e.g. if they are behind two proxy servers that are being picked randomly.

Harry, I've left that new option on for you, so you can experiment with it. I suspect you'll find that it solves your problem and that you don't notice any new problems. But if you notice some people are losing their login, remove this line from info.php:

Code

$SITE_INFO['full_ips']='1';

Took the dog for a walk - 30 to 40 mins - came back to find Chelsea had scored two against Southampton, and that this topic had been resolved.

Can any other CMS claim this kind of support? I think not!

Will add the "full_ips=1" bit to my info.php and report back, like Harry.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Not so fast, I didn't give you the file to add support for the option ;)

ROTFLMAO!

OK, taken the file and uploaded it to server. I will wait a few mins before checking to see if the asterisks (or even OBELISKS (obelix)) are a thing of the past.

Confirm that Harry!

I still have a few 'legacy' asterisks remaining, the first one now showing 43 mins ago, some much older.

I can live with that, as it isn't something I check regularly in any case!

Thanks, Chris.
