I know one isn't yet available to the public, but as stated in the conversion guide on this site, it's 'relatively easy' to create a new importer. Can this be done?

Umm its already built into the system.
Any forum script that can be used with ocPortal can be imported.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

I will leave it to Chris to give you a proper answer to this question, but I will direct you to the Administration Zone's tools -> import page, where we can see that we currently support importing forum data from Invision Power Board v2.0.x.

ah I just assumed if it could link to it that it could import it.
I know I tried importing 2.1 as a test and it worked.

I've checked the tutorial, and it says it's relatively easy for ocProducts to make an importer, not necessarily for anyone ;). A PHP programmer with good experience would be ok though.

I can't say specifically whether the currently IPB importer would work with IPB 2.2 or not. We originally did plan to keep these updated, and to regularly make new importers, but we don't have the resources we thought we would (the income doesn't justify the expense). There are also new pieces/versions of software people might want to import coming out so often that our efforts would be spread like jam.

So we leave it up to other enterprising people to write new importers (or to pay for someone to get them written).

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

It was an evaluation test to see what I knew and what I needed to study.
