Inquiry about Chat positioning

Hey, I was wondering if it's possible to invert the chat system, such that messages fill up from top (oldest) to bottom (newest) and the text box goes underneath the chat messages. Most of the prospective members I'm dealing with are accustomed to this format and requested I change it.

If it's done in the CSS, a little general guidance on where to look and what to do would be greatly appreciated if possible.

It would be a php change.

I did that for the shoutbox. According to my notes all that was needed to insert a:

Code

$messages=array_reverse($messages);
just before a foreach ($messages as $_message) loop in /sources/chat.php.

I suspect it would be something similar for the chat room.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but that should point you in the right direction.

The chat room processes new messages dynamically, while the shoutbox doesn't, so it'd be in the Javascript where it puts the nodes together.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

So much for my efforts to search out what might handle that inversion for me in the Javascript. (I really should just buckledown and learn the language sometime.)

Thanks for the help guys.
