Install Step 4 or 5 Failure

Trying to install. I enter the correct info for step 4. Then the install tries to display the page for step 5, the page is blank with only a blue background. The only uncommon factor in step 4 is the database is on a separate machine, thus an IP address is entered. I know the account is good. using IE v6.

Any ideas?

Please try the following….

In case the installer is running out of memory

Create a file named .htaccess in the same directory as the installer containing:

Code

php_value memory_limit "16M"

In case the quick installer will not work with your server

Try using the manual installer.

In case the database server isn't allowing remote access

A little known and somewhat confusing fact with mySQL is that usually mySQL servers are only set up to accept local connections. Therefore please check that your server does indeed allow remote connections via the username your installing with. Typically two things have to be done to allow this:
  • Basically in mySQL users are added separately for each 'host' that access is accepted from.
    • Usually this is set to 'localhost', but it can also be set to '%' meaning 'all hosts'.
    • Alternatively you can actually add a new user and specifically set which host it is for (i.e. the IP address of the server running ocPortal)
  • mySQL has to allow remote connections in it's config file

Of course ocPortal should be giving a proper error message, and if you aren't able to resolve the problem using any of the above possibilities, we'd be happy to help further.

the web server is windows. I added the htaccess and get an error. Without it and trying to see what installed did before the failure , I get

"The website's first database query (checking the page request is not from a banned IP address) has failed. This almost always means that the database is not set up correctly, which in turns means that either backend database configuration has changed (perhaps the database has been emptied), or the configuration file (info.php) has been incorrectly altered (perhaps to point to an empty database). It could also mean that the usersubmitban_ip table alone is missing or corrupt, but this is unlikely. As this is an error due to ocPortal's environment being externally altered by unknown means, ocPortal cannot continue to function or solve the problem itself."

this seems to point to your comment about remote connections. Seems wierd to be that way. This should be normal operations for an ISP and database architecture.

It sounds like the database can be connected to, but perhaps not written to. If you have the ability to browse the database (using something like phpMyAdmin), a copy+pasted list of the contents would help diagnose this.
Another theory is that the Windows install requires some file permissions that need to be set. Did you originally use the quick installer or the manual installer?
Also, if you can view the page source when the 'blank blue screen' is shown and paste it here, it would help me get a better idea of what has happened. It's very unusual to get a coloured screen with no text, and there might be a clue if the source as to where the problem happened.

Right now I am using the manual installer. I will recheck permissions. There might be a problem with the ISP and the database due to another problem on my account. But here is the code from the blue screen.

We're getting closer. Please extract the install.php file from this:
Download: ocPortal 3.0.5 with PHP 4.1 support [manual installer] - ocPortal.com
upload it, run the install.php file as before and again paste the HTML from the blank screen step.
This time we should get a more accurate error message.

I'm sorry for all these tests.

Here is the code running your install file. it looks the same. I had the ISP switch from PHP 4 to PHP 5. with PHP4 got the incompatible login algorithm issue. Thus I had them switch to PHP5. With 5 , i get the blue screen. In switching to PHP5, they had to do something with the DB server and switch me. I tested your install file pointing to the new DB server IP (after I created an account). Still no joy.

Ok, I don't want to mess you around any further. If you'd like me to personally install ocPortal for you for free, choose 'Contact Us' from our website and submit all the details we'll need in a support ticket (Database details, FTP details, etc). Whatever the problem is, I'lm sure I'll be able to work around it quite fast with direct access to the server.
Before I proceed you'll need to also agree to what is said here.
