Hi,

Your server seems to be giving very strange behaviour when it tries to open connections to other servers, or itself. ocPortal does this quite a lot, for detection broken URLs, for example, and each time the server is opening up a connection then immediately dropping it.

Please try replacing sources/files.php with the file inside this zip.

Hi,

1)

Please try going to the 'Tools' section of the Admin Zone, then the "PHP Info" icon. What value does it show for "default_socket_timeout", if any?
I think now that the problem before, and this problem, may be caused by the web host setting a timeout value that is very small, like 1. The default for PHP is 60.

2)

If you're referring to registering ocPortal:
I can't see any pending registrations in our registration database, or any payments last night from PayPal.

If you're referring to creating a username on ocportal.com:
I can't see any non-validated accounts.

Please contact us with details of the username involved and I'll look into it further for you.

These new files will try and reset the limit back to normal when ocPortal starts up.

Welcome :).
We did have some server problems of our own last night, so perhaps this explains it.

I assumed these were the same problem, but they are not. Your server is running a whacky anti-leech thing which is stopping links to the image working, but I think that is actually a third issue.

I'll need more info before I can help further. Please try changing line 484 of sources/files.php from:

Code

   $mysock=@fsockopen($url_parts['host'],array_key_exists('port',$url_parts)?$url_parts['port']:80,$errno,$errstr,6.0);
to:

Code

   $mysock=fsockopen($url_parts['host'],array_key_exists('port',$url_parts)?$url_parts['port']:80,$errno,$errstr,6.0);

Then you should get a stack dump error from ocPortal. Please post the stack dump here, or at least the error message at the start of it.

It might be that your server can't connect to itself.

Thanks. Looks like you have one of the more pesky web hosts ;).

When ocPortal can't use fsockopen to download stuff it tries to use a lamer but effective method. I think that is also failing, so please try changing line 688 from:

Code

         $read_file=@file_get_contents($url);
to:

Code

         $read_file=file_get_contents($url);
and again report the error here.
(EDIT: oh and also please remember to reverse the last change you did)

Sorry for messing you around here, but really it's the web hosts fault. A lot of web hosts say they support PHP, but then they turn off critical features, or make very unusual configurational settings, and it causes trouble.

Thanks. Does PHP-Info display 'CURL' (or 'CuRL', or something like that…) as one of the sections?

I'll do what I can to make sure we get this working, but things are getting a little awkward now due to all these disabled things. At this point I think the options are:
  • asking the web host to change the settings (seems unlikely - in my experience most shared hosts are pretty stalwart against that)
  • Improving the ocPortal download system so it can run of CuRL (which is another way PHP can be made to download stuff). The problem here is that most servers don't have that turned on, so that's why I'm asking you to do the check above.
  • Changing ocPortal so it never needs to download stuff.

I reckon I'll probably have a shot at the last option, but it'll take a bit of time. I don't mind doing it, but it'd be next weekend until I could.

Thanks :). That was quite shocking to see – they've put a filter on CuRL even though they don't have it installed. They've also filtered a lot of other stuff.
One of the annoying things about PHP is server administrators can turn any part of the language off with a config change :(. Kind of like having a conversation when words can be randomly deleted from the English language ;).

I'll take a look and see what I can do about removing the requirement for ocPortal to download stuff.
