Trying to install on a Windows server again using the latest Ocportal version (manual install package). Everything works good up to step 5, then it hangs, producing the error, "Could not connect to database-server (Can't connect to MySQL server on 'mysql' (61))"

Looking at the database, there were 46 tables dumped on one attempt, and on another attempt, only 21 tables.

I suspect it's my database settings, not sure what I have control over in that regard. Using mysql server 4.1.14, and I suspect I have little to no control over it because it's part of a webhosting package.

The ironic part is…the Unix server I use runs Ocportal flawlessly, but I have relatively limited disk space and bandwidth transfer. The Windows server that doesn't like Ocportal has unlimited disk space and bandwidth (or at least that's what I'm told). Now if I could just merge the two, it would be a perfect world!

Something else odd…the install will not even start if I use Firefox 3.0.11. I have to run the install in IE 8 to get it to start.

It sounds like the server is overloaded.

I think your last point about Firefox vs IE might have been a coincidence, and just the load was spiking heavily around when you were trying with Firefox; the first installer step checks for corrupt files which is quite exhaustive.

"Can't connect" is probably happening as the MySQL server is dropping connection mid-way and ocPortal is trying to re-connect, but MySQL is too overloaded to allow it.

All this is very theoretical, but I think likely.

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
