error is bad domain name

I want to put ocportal on my local machine for education and testing.  I have windows 7 (arrggg) and use Xampp.  It does fine until it gets to step 5 and kicks the error that it is a bad domain name.  I have used all the forms I could think of yet it won't let me install beyond this.

It appears as tho I have to use a domain name and I don't have one to use other than localhost????  I have several linux hosted sites I can put it up in a subfolder but was concerned out that also as I see a lot of forum posts with subfolder generated errors.  Any help here would be a good thing for this old man.

Hi,

I am also using xampp on my local machine. What I do to create environments for my development sites is use vhosts to create dummy domains such as www.dev-site1.com and also add 127.0.0.1 www.dev-site1.com in my hosts file.

ocPortal will not then complain about installation.

If you need step by step instructions, I can provide these.

I have never used xampp so can't be of much help with it.

I use WampServer. With it I don't need a domain associated with it, localhost works fine.

Hi,

This is an odd one. The domain error ("Invalid domain name given") only happens if the domain name contains a colon or slash. When we auto-detect it it shouldn't be possible for this to be the case. You might have put it in, but I don't think you'd report the problem if you'd changed the default. But what domain name value was there on step 4? Should just be 'localhost'.

For reference, we are now on Microsoft Web Platform, which you can install for free on Windows 7.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thanks, y'all helped tremendously.  I forgot Wamp, I have it on a different but used daily laptop.  Tried that, like a dream no problems at all.  I am doing the first time config right now.  Thank again to all
