Is it possible to import from another server?

I had shared hosting and I moved on to a VPS.  I was using SMF 2.0.X and want to import all content from server A to server B.   I have done this once already but on the same server.

What I need to do now is import to another server and not locally.

How can this be done.

I have both SMF and OCP forums on server A.  Only need to transfer 1 of the 2 to server B.

What is the best way to go about this?

Can I just download certain files and or something to the VPS and run the importer or isnt it that simple?

In theory it is just a matter of configuring MySQL and putting in the right host when importing.

However, with each query comes latency. If say latency is 30ms, and it has to do 10,000 queries, that's 300 seconds. I just generally wouldn't want to put the strain and points of failure like that on an intensive long process. Also it can't auto-move things like avatar files or uploads to the right place.

It's better to just copy it all to the new server and import from there, much less to go wrong.

As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

It's best just to get it fully running on new server as it was on old server. Theoretically it doesn't need to actually run, but confirming it as running will reduce chance of accidentally missing something.
