How to import the old backup to a new site?

I've had some trouble upgrading my site from v4.. to v5.. after all I couldn't fix the issues. I deleted the old site now and reinstalled with the newest version. I wonder if its possible to import at least the forum posts and the "downloads cataloque" from a backup of the old site/database.
Can anybody help me, please?

Shame you didn't keep the 'old' and install the 'new' and then import the old stuff to the new install. There are several posts started by me about this subject, because that is what I ended up doing.

However, I didn't go the route of populating the new site from a backup, so I shall step aside and let somebody else (or even the staff) with knowledge of that action give you their advice.

If you are still stuck after that, PT me and I shall try and walk you through the various choices open to you.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

I've done this before with PHPBB3.
How I done was was I did just as you done I reinstalled the new version thinking that I was not going to use the back up (start all new) but I changed my mind , also since I all ready heavily edited and added new addons I knew that I did not want to delete this version just add the old forums users and posts.

What I had to do was reinstall the old phpbb3 version with my old information and update and in the mysql panel I only back up the information I wanted and them added this backup to the new database. I don't even know if this would work with ocPortal.

This worked for me, this may not be how its done, but worked.

IF you try this make sure you do a backup though sql manager of the database you want to update.
