General issues with IM

Testing the Instant Messaging (IM)
There are a number of issues you may care to comment on. Firstly is it usefull or not. Probably yes because MS Live Messenger is going wild currently. Are there issues with it well if you take a look at a taypical IM session and see the layout there may be some advice I can get as to how to improve this. Key comments back from users are
  • Untidy as each thread poster lists in a small rectangle box and after a number of posts it gets cramped.
  • Some overlapping text participants in the example attached
  • Longer names appear outside rectangles

Testing the CHAT Rooms
When you next go down to the local lunch bar ask the guy behind the counter what the HTML Code is for Blue text. LOL

Maybe a better offering would be insert the small colour font box you use elsewhere. I dont believe its a good idea to have a box where the user has to know an HTML code to create a text colour. Might be ok for you hot shot HTML Geezers. The chat rooms are generally working well in ver 3.14.

One enhancement we would like to see is the emoticon selection box available in posting on the chat similar to the sort of thing you can do with MS livemessenger.

You can allow a guest to be assigned on the buddy list. Did you mean to allow that? When you have 20 guests which guest are you getting?

The software continues to get better every version …

PS I tried to upload a file to this post but the upload area is all shaded out. Will post the .png file when I can figure out whats happening. Also the little c sysmbol by the WYSIWIG editor no longer works.

Would you mind providing a screenshot? If the upload boxes are greyed-out, try disabling the WYSIWYG editor, or using some external image hosting service.

Space is at a premium on the chat interface, and so we're trying to keep the number of buttons down. You can always use Comcode to change the characteristics of your post. ;)

I'll look into this.

The issue here Phillip is that the users coming to sites are usually hardly PC literate let alone have any idea what you are talking about with Comcode. You are already using a colour box elsewhere. Paul and I have talked at length about this and how many colours of text do you need. If you did a horizontal box with five or six cols that would be enough but get rid of the "key in the html code" box. I dont know if you are that old you rember Mirc and those chat room softwares. They were pretty good. I certainly think the emoticons would be really usefull in the chat interface. It works pretty well now so adding the emoticons and a colour text bar might be adequate. We are trying to get all modules into shape one at a time so that they are more user friendly from a non tech point of view. We are working on help files as the current help is fine for IT people and sites admins (Although way short in some areas like security permissions low med high ranges etc ) But for Mrs and Mr internet user it is way tooooo complex.

Here is the attachment Phillip and Cheryl who is a chat room expert having years of experience suggests as follows:

Cheryl says…. The way the history is displayed is not working. You need a log file with a text output and each by date. How can you cut and paste a complete discussion for a date such as an educational discussion on a topic. The thread tags are not dated. What happens when you get months of threads in IM and you end up with many boxes. The IM concept and chat room is fast being replaced by advanced utilities from Microsoft and others like live communication server, live messenger which includes web cam and audio streams

Which history is she talking about here? The downloadable chat logs have each message by date, as do IM messages and messages in normal chat rooms.

What happens when you get months of threads in IM and you end up with many boxes.

That would be a very unusual use-case, analogous to somebody leaving all the windows open for all the MSN conversations they'd ever had! ;)

Clarifications

The problem we have had is that there is no

Downloading chat logs for IM and it was IM we referred to and NOT the chat room
as detailed in the user guide  …  The user Guide says there is an ability to download logs of any chat conversations (NOT IM our mistake as there is NO LOG For IM) you have on ocPortal is quite useful. To take advantage of this wonderful feature, simply click the "Download chat logs" link at the bottom of a chatroom.

YES it is there INSIDE the chat room not in the lobby.. my mistake… I would expect it to be in the chat room of course.

You will be presented with a handy form, where you can specify for which room to download the logs, and the time/date range from which to collect messages. Clicking submit will process the request, and provide you with a link to download the logs. Clicking on this link will open a file download box from your browser.

In relation to IM probably a misunderstanding on my part is that the IM chat windows remain OPEN for all time regardless if the party has left IM chat. To close an IM chat window (even though it is not the ACTIVE chat) you need to use the CLOSE button.

That works well and does close previously open chats. Not sure why you would maintain them as open and clutter the screen with heaps of open chat boxes with nothing going on in them but thats another story.

The key thing is that it pays to read the user guides and then re read them again so you dont post stupid posts.

There currently isn't the ability to download logs of instant messaging conversations, but we may consider adding it for the next version of ocPortal.

As far as I'm aware, that's how all major instant messaging programs operate. It allows you to continue your conversation with somebody next time you're both online, retaining the history from your last conversation. :)

Thanks for all of that Phillip it makes sense I can see that clearly. The only issues that are unresolved really in this thread and hopfully in future enhancements for the chat room might be a colour bar to select text colour and maybe a font bar selection rather than a manual font entry… It works well that is the main thing…

Hi,

There are a few minor bugs and usability issues identified here. Some of which will be countered in the next patch release, and some of which will be countered in the next major release.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
