Why is there so many 404 errors reported?

I am a bit confused by what I see in USAGE/SITE STATISTICS/PAGE VIEW STATISTICS. This because of all the 404 errors reporting there.

This is the stats for various top pages. Dates from public opening 4-2-10 to today 4-9-10"
(All) …………………………..66,397
:404 (404 Not Found) .53,972
site:galleries ……………….6,918
:start ………………………….1,778
site:calendar ………………….372
site:search …………………….264
site:members …………………224
forum:topicview …………….200
site:iotds ……………………….178
:join ……………………………….174
cms:cms_iotds ……………..173
:login …………………………….156

Any idea why so many 404 errors - are these actually people on site who cant go some where when they click on a menu or a thumbnail, etc. or something like that?

I also see this when viewing Who's Online on my site. A lot of guests and are viewed as seeing 404 error pages.

I had just noticed this in my Who's Online. Wanted to see where people were. Had about 4 members and 10 guests…. all members guests but 3 were viewing 404 error pages supposedly. Then showed up here and then saw your post… was funny in a way.

Could be search engines looking at old URLs, people getting old URLs from bookmarks, etc.

I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

Maybe do a lookup in ocPortal on those members to see where they've been visiting.
