I got this error when I tried to save an edit to the IOTD page

I'm guessing I have to unpack the tar file and there are instructions inside?

Yes, unpack, and the 'tree' is self explanatory. My preference is to lodge the 'hotfixes' in the *_custom directory until the next upgrade, and if the upgrader says the file is no longer necessary (an unnecessary override), I remove it at that time.
Anybody think differently about this. I am always prepared to sit corrected!

My preferred method is to duplicate the original file in place giving it an extension of .BU_ DESC where DESC is a descriptive element like ANTISPAM. I then copy the updated version to the original directory. This method assures I don't have issues with overrides when upgrading. The consistent use of .BU_DESC in all caps makes it easy to spot these entries in listings (either FTP sessions or in the file integrity check) where they can be quickly removed.
Another advantage to this approach is that it documents why I made the change.
Now that Chris has implemented the hotfix patch system, I am probably going to append the hotfix number after DESC. If the fix comes in a forum post, I'll probably use the post number instead.
Just what seems to work for me with minimal effort at upgrade time.

I'm sure I don't have anything to unpack the tar as my computer seems confused about what program to uses. It's not my usual world.
Wondering if there is a good program that everybody uses? ...and free is still easier for me to afford but it costs what it costs I guess.

7ZIP is FREE, and it handles TARs (packing and unpacking). The link gives you a choice of 32-bit and 64-bit.
