I am trying to find the area where you can add RSS feeds. I have many to add, this is going to be a very important part of my site. Where can I create new blocks?

Good idea. I was thinking of the same thing earlier, but was unable to find where to do it. I know how to add menu's, but is there a way to add blocks that contain HTML? I have an MKPortal mod I want to convert for use with ocPortal :D

Edit the Comcode page (both panels and the front page are Comcode pages, by default) to include some new Comcode. For instance,

Code

[html]here is some <span style="color: red">HTML</span>[/html]

A feed goes below...
[block="http://blahblah/feed.rss"]main_rss[/block]

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

O dah thats not a real url.
 :$

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Edited to add:  I can't figure out how to put in the code so that it shows as part of the message.

I have a question on this one, too.  I found in the tutorial where you explain about how to add an RSS feed to a side block by adding this code:

'

'

However, whenever I go to a syndication site to get their feed, their link looks nothing like this simple link in your example, ending in .xml.

When I click on xml, I get an entire page of stuff. Or some of them don't even offer different options, they have a snippet of javascript code or html code or something else entirely.

Can someone post step by step instructions for a poor newbie like me?

Okay, I'm still not figuring this out.  I have added a side_rss block to my right panel - no problem there.  But no matter what I do, I can't get it to display the feed results.  Every syndicated feed I've tried to plug in there gives me an error like this:

Could not open the RSS/Atom stream, http://about.newsusa.com/RSS.asp?MemberId=2880&idCategory=267&Summary=1&Image=1&NumPerPage=10

All of the RSS feeds I've picked up are like this, regardless of format. What am I doing wrong?

Please extract the following file and upload it as sources/rss.php.

Attachment
» Download: rss.zip (4 Kb, 339 downloads so far)

It won't fix the problem, but it will give a better error message that may help us fix it. For some reason your copy of ocPortal isn't able to download that URL – however it must be something about your server as it is working from here.

Some servers like my old one blocked RSS connections.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Okay, I'll do that when I get home.  However, it's not just that one URL, it's every URL I've tried, from about 4 different sources.

Okay, I uploaded that file as instructed, but today when I put the side_rss block in and use that address, the feed works fine!  <throws up hands>  I'm totally boggled.

Is it possible that some kind of firewall or something at work prevented me from seeing that there?  Maybe I just have a gremlin….

The error you saw came when ocPortal failed to download the RSS feed from the specified server (for an unknown reason). Therefore the problem was somewhere between your server and the the RSS feed server (likely your server), but definitely not your own computer.
