As I understand it, this should pull items from some specific forum to insert onto the page where it's placed.
There is one <?> parameter which should be a designator for the forum from which to pull the news.

Using the add new page wizard I now have:

Code

<h1 class="screen_title">Past Events</h1>
<input class="ocp_keep_ui_controlled" readonly="readonly" size="45" style="cursor: pointer;" title="" type="text" value="main_forum_news (dbl-click to edit/delete)" /><br />
<input class="ocp_keep_ui_controlled" readonly="readonly" size="45" style="cursor: pointer;" title="" type="text" value="main_comcode_page_children (dbl-click to edit/delete)" />

How do I go about linking this page to the forum - and anything else you'd like to add.

Basically  see using this as something like a generic blog, but pulling only entries from the forum.  Suggestions regarding appropriateness of this use would also be appreciated.

I can't comment on the snippet of code you've posted as I don't follow the resoning.

However, I have the following code on one of my test sites …
[block="5" forum="1,2,3,4,5" date_key="lasttime" title="Latest Forum Entries"]side_forum_news[/block]
… and it works perfectly, displaying the latest entries from the forums identified (e.g. 1,2,3,4,5). Perhaps you can give that a try and add that to the place you want the block to appear?

What I have now looks like this:

Code

[block param="5" forum="9" member_based="0" date_key="lasttime"]main_forum_news[/block]

I'm guessing that the only difference is that what I want is the news to appear on its own page ( "Recent Events" ) rather than on the side bar.

The reference to 'side bar' as a building block indicates that it could/should be used to populate a narrow space on a page with information.

In the past I've used side-bar blocks over various pages of my site(s), and other than trying to rein in the width of a given block, they all work fine on their own pages.

Try the following on a test page (which you can delete later - or not!) to see if it answers any of your demands. The parameters will need to be adjusted, of course.

{| 27%:70% wide floats | [block="5" forum="1,2,3,4,5" date_key="lasttime" title="Latest Forum Entries"]side_forum_news[/block] | [box][title="3"]Galleries[/title][/box] [block="root" zone="_SEARCH" title="Galleries"]main_gallery_tease[/block] |}

That snippet of code, inserted on a front page of one of my test sites gives the following display …

… which may or may not be what you are trying to achieve.

Hope that helps.
