A question about advertising

My technical skills are limited and I am having numerous problems setting up on a different server from OCPortal.  I now have a fatal error that prevents me even accessing my site.  I have spent far to much time on configuring when all I want to do is get on with setting up pages and content. Clearly it would be easier to host on the ocportal server.

I decided against this initially because the licence says I cannot run ads on my site if ocportal hosts it.  Have I read that correctly?

Does that still apply if I purchase and register my copy and still have it hosted by ocportal?  The documentation is not clear on this. I don't plan to run ads initially but there is a possibility that I could have advertisers on my site in the future.

If you do want to run ads on your site and want to be able to do more with your site I would get the host I have which is great and only 4.95 a month.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Thanks Ami, that's cheap compared to my host - NZ $20.75 per month.  However, depending on the answer I get from OCPortal staff I would prefer using OCPortal so that I minimise the technical aspects of installation

Hi,

Unfortunately our hosting service doesn't allow ocPortal banners at all, unless they're ours (which would only run on those without a licence). This is for a technical reason based on how the service is configured. You can, however, place banners into templates if you wish.

The service has remained in beta because we haven't been receiving feedback, positive or negative, about it. Frankly, we're not sure how well it works, and haven't had time to fully test it. Feel free to give it a shot and see how well it works for you, but I should advise that we're not guaranteeing the service is going to be out of beta any time soon, so please don't make a purchase decision based purely on our hosting.

We're aware that a lot of users have trouble getting ocPortal to work on their own servers. Sometimes this is our fault (compatibility bugs), but increasingly it's the fault of web hosts who don't properly configure their servers. If you tell (or remind us) what your current problem is, we'll see if we can help you with it.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
