Chris,

Is their anyway to stop other users seeing another member's IP address in the "my profile" page?

too few characters in choice drop down catalogue menu

I am yes. I had a look but couldn't find an option to get rid of it. Anyway, I'll have a another look. If it can be done, I'll find it eventually.

Chris. I have a more pressing problem with the catalogue pages though. The type of input field I have chosen is the choice drop down menu. The problem is, the menu is limited to a fairly low number of characters. I need about twice the number of characters available.

Also, I understand if this is too complicated to be answered here, but I would love to have two interconnected drop down menus. What I mean is this:

Let's say I want a member to enter their region where they live. There are too many regions for one drop down menu, e.g.
Where do yo live? London | Birmingham | Glasgow | Manchester

When someone chooses, say, London, I'd like a second drop down menu to appear containing the different areas of London, e.g. Clapham | Islington | Knightsbridge etc.

It's too much to put every area of Britain in one drop down menu. I can't anyway, as the number of characters is limited.

Sorry for bothering you.

Another catalogue problem?

I have another catalogue query.

When choosing data filling out an entry in the category, the only data entries which are in purple (meaning they have to be filled out) are member ID, email, date and time. If anything else is ticked in the catalogue as being a required entry, it shows as not required (green) when choosing data in an entry.

I'm not sure why this is. Is it a bug?

answered last query

I think I have answered the last query. Required fields only work with those entries where data is needed to be filled in.

It don't work for choice menus as there is a default setting in the choice menu anyway. Ok, that's common sense. Sorry.

I was trying to imply that the IP address does not show for non-staff, so by testing as staff you're not really seeing things as they are. I believe the documentation somewhere talks about this, and explains how to best test a site.

I'm aware of of the length issue and I'll be reviewing this shortly.

I understand and agree with what you're saying about having two drop-downs, but it's not as simple as that I'm afraid. If the second drop-down changed based on the first, it would have to use Javascript to do it. Relying on Javascript breaks various web standards, so I can't really design features purely based just on that - it needs something more, something more than we could really squeeze into the catalogues interface because it's quite specialistic (I know it doesn't seem so, but it just doesn't fit well as a generic component). Really what it needs is a custom module with it's own implementation of a form designed to meet the needs of your data - and I'm afraid that requires a programmer. There are just limits on what can be squeezed into catalogues without extra programmer work, it suits many people, but isn't the superset of what any kind of web form might want to be able to do.

When choosing data filling out an entry in the category, the only data entries which are in purple (meaning they have to be filled out) are member ID, email, date and time. If anything else is ticked in the catalogue as being a required entry, it shows as not required (green) when choosing data in an entry.

It's probably because they're lists or check-boxes (tick-boxes). Those can't not be chosen, so aren't shown as required because they can't be optional.

Ah ok just read your next post - you worked it out :).

all my issues on a plate

I get you.

I thought two drop down menus may be too advanced.

Can it be done with php as a custom module? Can I fit this in with the generic category I already have?

I actually could get away with one drop down menu for my site if I were allowed more characters. Could you lengthen it (or can I)?

I just realised that it was only admin that viewed certain data. Great. That is solved.

Apart from the above issue, I've written down my remaining issues to resolve before I can get my website up and running. This is just to throw it out here now once and for all.

1. Possible banner advertising. Is it possible to put a banner in the middle of a set of posts in the forum. And also in the middle of a set of entries in a catalogue? (not critical)

2. Are the options "blog" "blog archive" and "start personal topic" in the my profile menu only for the administrator of the site? I don't want this feature for general members. (critical)

3. Is it possible to automatically add the time and date when a member writes an entry in a catalogue?
I understand this added code below allows visitors to email the member (and show their username). Would I use a little extra code to add the date and time? (critical)

{+START,IF,{$EQ,{CATALOGUE},classifieds}}
<p>
This advert was posted by
<a href="{$PAGE_LINK,_SEARCH:members:view:{SUBMITTER}}">{$USERN
AME*,{SUBMITTER}}</a>.<br />
You might want to
<a href="{$PAGE_LINK,_SEARCH:contactmember:misc:{SUBMITTER}}">e
mail {$USERNAME*,{SUBMITTER}}</a>
to query more about {FIELD_0*}.
</p>
{+END}

4.I can't find a comcode box which let's visitors search for the entries under the designated fields from the catalogue. I'd thought this would be a staple of any catalogue design. If it isn't there, then I'm sure it must be easy to put one up. It would just use the field criteria from the catalogue. (essential)

5. I can add entries myself, so I 'm sure members can do it. I'm about to look into it so I'll probably get this one sorted quickly. (essential)

Sometimes things go really smoothly and it's amazing. Other times, it's like walking through quick setting cement.

Anyway, those are my issues I'm trying to solve before going live. I'll get there eventually.

There's a limit on what I can answer on the forum myself- basically I can address bugs, or things the documentation does not cover (the amount of time we can give to free support is limited). We offer commercial support for people who need things stepping through in any detail. Or, anyone else can answer the topic. So I'm going to have to give some short answers here I'm afraid.

Can it be done with php as a custom module? Can I fit this in with the generic category I already have?

Sure, a programmer can tie in a custom CMS module to a catalogue, if that's wanted.

Could you lengthen it (or can I)?

We're looking into it.

Possible banner advertising. Is it possible to put a banner in the middle of a set of posts in the forum. And also in the middle of a set of entries in a catalogue? (not critical)

Please check the documentation. This kind of thing is discussed in the main banners tutorial.

Are the options "blog" "blog archive" and "start personal topic" in the my profile menu only for the administrator of the site? I don't want this feature for general members.

They will not be shown to people who are not assigned the permissions. That might be page permissions (in the case of the page named 'blog'), or specific permissions.

Is it possible to automatically add the time and date when a member writes an entry in a catalogue?

It is already in the CATALOGUE_DEFAULT_ENTRY_SCREEN template, but commented out.

I can't find a comcode box which let's visitors search for the entries under the designated fields from the catalogue. I'd thought this would be a staple of any catalogue design. If it isn't there, then I'm sure it must be easy to put one up. It would just use the field criteria from the catalogue.

It is built into the search module (advanced catalogue entries search). There are various ways to pull in a screen to be included within another, or you can take the XHTML for the search form and put it in a template or Comcode page.

Chris, short quick answers are fine.

I've forgotten two more easy questions.

6. I'm having problems changing the footer. I can see bottom blocks which is said to be for the footer, but how do you add them there? I've looked at the footer template and can't seem to add semihtml there.

I noticed on your own site, you have the rss feed in the footer. That is exactly what I want. I also want to change "send feedback" to "contact us". The FAQ just says see footer.tpl.

7. How do I change "be invisible" in the login and personal box? Is this just visible for admin?

Thank you

The 'block' symbol is explained in our Tempcode programming tutorial. You don't use Comcode but you can still put a block into a template.

How do I change "be invisible" in the login and personal box? Is this just visible for admin?

To remove it…

You need to remove this line from the BLOCK_SIDE_PERSONAL_STATS_NO template:

Code

            <label for="login_invisible">{!INVISIBLE}</label> <input type="checkbox" value="1" id="login_invisible" name="login_invisible" />

and this from LOGIN_SCREEN:

Code

            <p><label for="login_invisible">
               <input id="login_invisible" type="checkbox" value="1" name="login_invisible" />
               <span class="field_name">{!INVISIBLE}</span>
            </label><br />
            <span class="associated_details">{!INVISIBLE_TEXT}</span></p>

Change BLOCK_SIDE_PERSONAL_STATS_LINK_2 to:

Code

{+START,IF,{$NEQ,{NAME},{!INVISIBLE}}}
[&nbsp;<a title="{DESCRIPTION*}" href="{URL*}">{NAME*}</a>&nbsp;]<br />
{+END}
