I cannot install this program!

I am new at all of this, but do understand the basics… I was able to load the program to my ftp….. I am having problems installing the program on step 2. I keep getting an error code saying that my FTP directory is invalid…. I have tried every possible scenario, and still have no luck. I appreciate your help in advance!

Hi Mike,

Please try the manual installer. A proportion of web servers aren't able to use the quick installer, for a number of possible reasons.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

DB error

I get to stage 4 then it claims it cannot connect to the database. I created one for it, created a user, enabled it, the database is there but this thing cannot connect to it.

Well if it cannot connect to a database what's the point of installing it?

How's it going to function?

Even if I do it manually, how's it going to work? It couldn't connect via ftp, I do the download, upload and run install version, can't connect to a database. Do this thing actually work? OK, that was sarcasm, I know it works, I installed it once before about a year or two ago. At that time it was riddled with bugs and obscure interface issues that I gave up. I was hoping by now the thing would be more robust but I'm not seeing any good signs anywhere.

I'm really not sure I can be bothered with a long-winded manual install. I have a distinct whiff of deja-vu…

OK, I'll fav this page and come back later. If someone can PROMISE me that this thing now works without throwing errors everwhere and sending me a million "An error has occurred.." emails I'll try again.

Well I didn't change anything but after awhile it worked??! I can only presume it takes awhile for a new DB to become active.

OK, so far it seems to be working OK, though I've already managed to get lost trying to find something (how to change the news from 50% to fully across the front page)

Mmm.

I've a feeling I'll be here often, but in fairness it's working OK
