Hi,

As some of you may have seen we are on a course to move over from Raven Nuke 2.4 to OCP.

Currently we are experiencing some speed issues with our VPS (Hosted on Host Gator). It is a dedicated virtual server to us. People are seeing 30 or more second delays submitting or opening forum posts (phpBB 2). This varies over the day from almost instant to a long wait.
In my negotiations with them to get to the route of the problem they have asked me to run the site through GTMetrix - anyone else heard of this ?
Here is the output from the site at the moment:
http://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/vHcRfZbk

Now it did enable me to see that some of the added images were poorly optimised, reducing some 300kbytes of the page load - so all good.

I have ocp 7.1.6 running on the same VPS and it does not feel quick, in fact it feels quite sluggish and unresponsive, so I ran it through GTMetrix as well, the results were not good considering that this is virtually out of the box ocp (41% Page Speed Grade, 76% YSlow Grade) - would be interested to see other people results with ocp - are these metrics and guides good ones ?
I do not want to give the url out publicly to this site as it is still under test - but happy to supply it to cop staff to take a look.

Everything is pointing to a host issue - wish me luck getting to the bottom of it.

Cheers
Ade

I just did a test of my site at GTMetrix; here are the results:

Chris discussed some of these issues in another thread, pointing to the trade-offs involved:
View topic: Page Speed test result - ocPortal.com

There is a feature request that includes deferring JS which we will hopefully get sponsored with a few other issues which address CSS and JS clean-up:
0000423: Performance improvements: frontend technologies - ocPortal feature tracker

I actually consider my page load time reasonable considering that I am on shared hosting and that I load 10 pretty sizable images on my front page plus a lot of other stuff. But I do run Cloudflare on the domain which has definitely speeded the response – I am not sure it would get you mush since your site seems to revolve around your forums.

If specifying image sizes (one of my 'F' grades) is not a bad trade-off, then maybe Chris could consiider rolling it into tracker issue 423.

Hope this helps.

Bob

Thanks for the reply Bob - lots of helpful folk on here :-)

I have done a lot of optimisation of my MySQL database today and the users moaning of slow responses have noticed a marked improvement - which is great, in fact they are experiencing near instant response again.

My OCP version of the site is still slow to open forum sections and some posts - Robbie Goacher is looking into this for me as I type.

Cheers,
Ade
