When using the "Investigate user, by IP address", selecting Geo-Lookup consistently results in the following error:
Safari can't open the page "http://64.246.48.99:666/download/geoip/database/GeoIP.dat.gz?ips=72.102.28.41" because the server where this page is located isn't responding.

Firefox and Chrome also timeout.

A ping of the address (64.246.48.99:666) shows it responsive so I am not sure what the problem is other than maybe this address is always too busy.

Problem with external service I'm afraid. Hopefully they will fix it.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Chris-

Is it possible that there has been a change in Maxmind's API or the filename of the free data files.

When I look at their free offerings, I see files for GeoLiteCountry and GeoLiteCity.

All we do is link to a URL.

Well, if it continues to not work, I'd suggest you get rid of the link. It would not matter much since the same information is available in the Reverse-DNS lookup.

Chris-

You might want to look at this post for a possible solution (courtesy of temp1024).
