Currently, galleries that are inaccessible to theuser are displayed but the user is unable to select them. It would be preferable if inaccessible galleries 9or any user content) not display things which are inaccessible to the user.

I believe this is related. I have a single gallery which allows the uploading of video content which is inaccessible to all users except admin and super-moderators. However, after selecting "Galleries" under Content Management, the "Add video' and 'Edit video' icons are shown. When selected, the user cannot choose any gallery. It would be preferable not to display options which the user cannot access.

It's not so easy to change, because it is possible in ocPortal to have deep child galleries which are assigned access, when a higher parent does not. We'd have to write some fairly sophisticated code to include non-accessible intermediary nodes when required.

There are a couple of things you could do if it's a big deal for you.
  1. Use match-key-permissions so that the choose-to-edit screen is not accessible for most usergroups. You could put on a custom error message to say "Go find the add link on the frontend from the gallery you wish to add to."
  2. Use the Permission Tree Editor to deny edit permission on the cms_galleries module, but then add it back for individual categories. This would work as the icons would be missed out from the higher screen as it just checks cross-category. I would not do this myself though, it'd be a pain to maintain and not very user-friendly to have icons just disappearing.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I'll investigate match-key-permissions. I know that SoccerDad mentioned that they were his new best friend so they will likely meet my needs.

Thanks for the great support.
