basic installation question

I have to say, I'm impressed with ocportal's website and I want to install and get cracking.

It' s a newbie question and one you probably get all the time. I looked at Joomla before and I had already installed wampserver. When downloading ocportal, it requires an ftp address. Can I use ocportal with my own php/mysql/apache local host (wampserver), or do I need to find an external web hosting service first?

Thanks

Ali

firezilla

I've just downloaded Firezilla server (windows) and ran it. Is thiswhat I need to download ocportal? Firezilla doesn't give me a username.

Do I need wampserver at all? The two servers aren't running together.

Also,I wish to host a website in Ireland. The recommended hosting serviceElief does not seem to offer .ie domains. DO you know of one who does?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Al! Welcome aboard! If you are looking to kick the OCP tires on your local machine and it's Windows, then yes, a locally installed WAMP package will need to be installed. You should be able to skip the FTP portion via downloading the manual install/extract package of OCP4 (http://ocportal.com/site/dload.php?id=235). As for the hosting, you do not need to have your domain registered in the same location as your hosting. You can register your .ie anywhere and point the DNS settings to the hosting company of your choice. Having said that, I would recommend contacting Richard Rowan from Elief (Member profile of R.Rowan - ocPortal.com) and see if he can help with your .ie registration.

Hope this helps!

next step

Ahh… Thanks SD. In the meantime, I had also found this web page: http://ocportal.com/docs/tut_windows.htm#title__5624

I have wampserver running. I incidentally added a new user and password in addition to the default "root" and "no password" setting, but I don't think this matters, does it?

I then downloaded the manual version of ocportal and extracted it to my windows xp desktop. I open the folder and see an "install.php" file. What programme do I open this with? How do I link this to Wampserver?

Any help in getting started much appreciated.

Hi Al! No, no matter there for your testing environment. As for the second question: move the OCP extracted package from your desktop to a (create if needed) directory under the web root of your WAMP installation. Once done, open up your webbrowser and launch the installer, something like:

http://localhost/ocp4

Keep us posted!
Be well, SD

Getting there

Thanks SD,

Ok, I've done that. I'm a little unsure as to what is my web root folder for wamp. I installed wamp in the C drive only, not under any sub folders like "programmes". I put the entire manually extracted ocportal folder in the wamp folder which is located in the c drive. I have changed the ocportal folder name to "ocp4" for the sake of simplicity.

http://localhost/ works fine. But http://localhost/ocp4 doesn't. It says file not found.

Maybe I have put ocportal int he wrong folder?

Cheers.

got it, I think

Ahhh. I've seen a "www" folder in wamp and moved ocportal there. When I type "http://localhost/ocp4/" I now get this: "

ocPortal error

The top-level configuration file (info.php) is either not-present,empty, or corrupt. This file is created upon installation, and thelikely cause of this error is that ocPortal files have been placed, yetinstallation not completed. To install ocPortal, run the installer."

I run the installer and all is well.

Why did it gave me this message in the first place? Is it because I messed with "install.php" file, trying to open it yesterday?

got it

Ok, next step for me (you must have the patience of a saint).

After clicking "run this installer" I get this address in my browser: http://localhost/ocp4/install.php

I am at step one of ten.

It then says in red below:

There is no PHP ZIP extension on the server. Batch importing from zipfiles (this is not a common activity) will not work until zip supportis enabled/configured (either via the extension, or via configuringocPortal to use the InfoZip alternative).

I have enabled the extension and it is no longer a problem.

This is not a problem (yet). I'm just keeping you up-to-date.

install is complete! Yipee

Thanks a lot SD.

I have completed the installation.

I left the mysql database username root and password blank. Does that matter? I do have another username.

Anyway, I am now at the setting up stage.

Thanks a million.

Hey Al! Great to hear and no problem. For your testing period, yeah, no sweat on blank password, however, when you are ready to deploy on a hosted server, then prolly a good idea to lock that down a wee bit with a password.
