Why wont the flagrant text message appear at the top of the forums?
I tried it on the live demo and it didn't work either.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Why would it? The text appears at the bottom of each screen, although on non-registered sites it'll randomly display 'unregistered' or something like that instead.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Because in the point store it says when "buying" a text message: "You can write a message to appear at the top of our forums, and bottom of our website. You can choose the number of days for your message to remain on our site, as well."

I've always wondered this as well, but never really looked into it.

Members are going to be dissapointed…
They won't want a message that just appears at the bottom corner of the site…

Thanks Brian! This is definitely a bug, but it's been around, from as far as I remember, for the whole life of ocPortal – a fix will come soon.

With regards disappointment – if you so wish you can have the message appear in other places via some template programming. I'll answer more fully later.

Community saint

I am making a skin/theme for him so I might be able to code it if I knew what code went at the top for it to show up.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

The FLAGRANT_MESSAGE_DESCRIPTION language string, in the pointstore language file, is where this bug is. It'll be changed in the next patch release but is trivial to change manually (assuming you've found where in ocPortal you can change language strings).

Now, if you do want the flagrant text repeated…

The FLAGRANT parameter is passed into the BOTTOM.tpl template. Ordinarily therefore, you'd only be able to use it there. However thanks to our shift-encoding feature, you can put it anywhere you like. To do this, put this somewhere into BOTTOM.tpl

Code

{+START,SHIFT_ENCODE,FLAGRANT}{FLAGRANT}{+END}
and this into any template you like (such as TOP.tpl):

Code

{$SHIFT_DECODE,FLAGRANT}
