Well-settled

In Catalog

Hi All,

I have a catalog "classified ads" with several categories all of which take entries everything is fine...

As one of my "entries" required fields is Contact info, I have this set to file type email.  What I would like is to set the file type to email or user/member name.

How do I do this? Ultimately I want to require contact info(to be input at time of entry post.. I got this), in that the poster will either get an email or member PT, when a viewer is trying to contact the poster.

only members are allowed to post classified ads, but guests have view access. Do I have to setup anything in Ocportal to externally email a note when the Type is set to email?  And what about PT/ Internal email site specific?

Or am I as usual thinking about this wrong?

Thanks ~larryg1957

Hi Larry,

Configurable systems only stretch so far before you get past the level of preconceived configuration built in and need a programmer – and you'd be going past the stretching point here I'm afraid.

You'd need to compromise somewhere, e.g. remove validation and just have it as a line input, or to have two fields and make neither required.

EDIT: Duck's workaround is a good one :).

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Members can have Offsite Contact turned on in their Profile so I would think you could just make it link to profile and then if the users enabled email in their profile they can use it if not they can start a PT?

That way it is one REQUIRED field in the catalogue but the contact choices are made from the profile. Unless as Chris said you get in to a programmed custom solution.

Non-joined user

I set it to type email and made it required that will do what I need for now.  Then "they" can do a PT if it doesn't work for them.  I'll just put it in a FAQ or rules.

Thx. For you help and suggestions.

@Chris

then Perhaps a url ref or something in the "file" type Field

@duck good suggestion I'll play with....

Thanks to both of you.
