Hi,

I have followed all the instructions to connect my site to Facebook.

I can login using Facebook credentials.

I followed this thread http://ocportal.com/forum/topicview/misc/deploying/facebook-login-redirect.htm?start=20

and found the missing add-on - but I still cannot for the life of me see where you actually syndicate posts to Facebook.

Am I just missing something obvious ? But I cannot see anything on new or entered posts.

Can someone show me a screen shot of a working integration and what the syndication button/dropdown looks like.

I am an admin and have found the section where you can allow other groups to syndicate.

Cheers
Ade

Is the activities addon installed?

I mean that is was installed before I made this post for help.

What does the syndicate option on a post look like ?

Also I tried adding a few of the facebook blocks to a test page.

main_facebook_friends - gives:

The `href` parameter must reference a valid Facebook page, but "Facebook" is not a valid Facebook page.

The number is the group id for the MK1 Owners Club Facebook page - that is where I want any syndicated posts to go to.

Any ideas ?

Hi,

I think you have some misunderstandings here about what the addon does.

Mainly, there are two kinds of syndication:
  • Admin. Applies to only news and calendar events. You get to choose what to syndicate. So, this is not related to forum posts. This is designed for syndicating the broad strokes for marketing purposes.
  • Activities. Applies to individual members who have explicitly turned it on from their activities tab (in their member profile). You don't choose individual things to syndicate. This is for individuals to merge their activity into their own Facebook presence.

Of note is that things will only syndicate if they are publicly accessible (i.e. Guests could see it).

From that Facebook error, it sounds like you're trying to show friends of a group. Perhaps Facebook can only show members of a person or a page (I guess, people who like the page). Groups are different.

We've been putting a tonne of notes onto:
How to setup the Facebook Addon Feature for ocPortal versions 8 and 9 - ocPortal.com

If anything is missing, please add :).

I totally missed the activities tab in the profile !

I thought that you would be able to chose what to syndicate at a finer grain - but it makes sense that you cannot as not all posts are accessible to guests.

I was hoping that rather then post to your own Facebook page that the addin could post to a group facebook page.

This what gave me that thought:
"Optional. The Facebook page ID (a number) where syndicated content goes to, and associated to the site via OpenGraph. When you authorise Facebook syndication (from the Setup drop-down menu), you must be logged in to a Facebook account (on Facebook's end) that is an administrator of this page. Note that posts to the page will be shown as being from this Facebook account too. If you prefer, you can enter a user ID (for syndicating to a Facebook user's wall) or group ID (for syndicating to a group's wall) into this setting, which will work too, assuming again that you are logged in appropriately on Facebook's end. If you leave this setting blank then when you setup Facebook authorisation it will work out who you are logged in as, and enter that user ID here (i.e. posts will then go to your own wall)."

But even with a group ID set it still posts to my wall.

Thanks for the link, I had found that, it is where I realised that the other addin was required.

Cheers

Is there an easy way to customise the post icon that appears on Facebook ?

Honoured member

It's posting to your wall because you are the admin.  Even setting up your group page in your profile, even if it were to post to the group, it is still going to post to your personal page.  I haven't tried it so I don't know if this will work, but go to your profile and enter the group page in your facebook profile field and then in the activities feed turn on facebook syndication.  On my site, with me as admin, if I turn on syndication in my profile then everything is double posted, so it may just work.

Hmmm not sure I quite follow you.

I have the three fields setup fr the Facebook integration, ie the ID and the secret and the ID to post to. Syndication is turned on for me.

The integration posts to my Facebook page and not to the group page.

Perhaps I should explain, the car site I run also has a Facebook group page, I would like to see forum posts start to appear on the group page and not on each members personal facebook page.

The integration seems to point that it can do that..

I am admin for both the Facebook group and the OCP site.

No, only news and calendar events can syndicate like this.

I'm not sure what you want would actually be possible, even if ocPortal was recoded. News/calendar events will syndicate as the Facebook admin user that authorised the site – which you probably would not want for things coming from individual users (things like little forum posts). Yet, your individual users won't all be signed into Facebook Connect (either as Facebook users connecting to ocPortal, or ocPortal users who have enabled syndication via their Facebook accounts), so ocPortal has no identity to link them to.

What I was thinking that OCP could use the fact that a user is logged into Facebook (through the add-on) and then rather than post to that users wall, post to a groups wall instead - not sure if the authorisation can be carried through to allow that to happen though.

Perhaps it could be possible using Facbooks Graph API like this:
Group - Facebook Developers

Most of my forum users will not want to post their forum activity on their own facebook walls, but would be more than happy to see posts go on our Facebook group site - I see this as a better way to integrate the groups together and get better cross posting.

Right, that could happen, it would just require some code changes to send the posts there, and also somehow deal with a situation when someone isn't in the group and thus doesn't have access (possibly silent fail, and therefore a need to mention it on the syndication options).

Hi Chris,

Is that something that OCP would code for some folding stuff ?

If so I would like to be able to give the user the choice of:
(1) Syndicate nothing or
(2) Syndicate to their own wall or
(3) Syndicate to the sites group wall
from the Activity tab in their profile.

Silent failure is good if they are not a member of the facebook group.

This way I can boost the forum/facebook group interaction.

I would also like the ability to configure the facebook post icon, so that it looks more like where it has originated from.

Cheers
Ade
