Is anyone else having an issue with FaceBook login not working?

Have tried multiple browsers and the functionality is not operating. In Chrome the box appears then vanishes. Same on Firefox, but the box at least stays there before doing nothing.

Can access FaceBook with no issues…

Looks like this has resolved from their end, please disregard.

Hi,

Sometimes Facebook does have problems like this when something goes wrong on their end.

If you need to break into a Facebook account using normal login, use the lost password feature – it will delink it and email you a new password.

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thanks Chris, my concern is that members have no idea to do this.

Is there a way to have the individual login choices (normal, FaceBook) function independently?

Ideally, whatever boxes they choose to use should both be functioning without regard for one another.

At least I thought that was how they were supposed to operate…

If you login with Facebook then no password has ever been set. (We never know your Facebook's own login details, as that's not how Facebook's secure login mechanism works)

If you attach an existing account to Facebook, it becomes the same as if it was initially set up with Facebook.

The mechanism basically works by filling your Facebook account details into the password field in the database, with ocPortal then requiring that Facebook account confirmed as logged in via some cross-talk with Facebook's servers. So, it wouldn't be easy to change.

If we did support login via both Facebook and a password, that would be an additional point of attack for a hacker (twice the password hacking opportunities).

In v10 we will make some improvements:
  1. The unknown authentication scheme error will provide a direct reset link and more explanation
  2. We're writing a very good Facebook tutorial, I'll include what I wrote here in it

Thanks Chris, appreciate the clarity!

My only call out would be that I was always a normal member, then used FaceBook once…every since it has been this way.

Normally, just let it pass until it resolves itself, but the other night it was very important to get on and I could not.

Glad to hear prompts will be in the new release :)

I think you are talking of some problem with Facebook, not ocPortal – I suspect you found this topic via Google.
