Could not connect to database-server (Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2))

Hi - I have also tried to join as a user but I haven't received the email back with the confirm link.

Anyway, I've been trying for ages to install OC and try it out - I've just bought the domain name and hosting package to ensure that they are the right spec for this programme but I've tried many times to install and this is the error message I keep getting

I'm a complete beginner with SQL and have no idea why it can't find what it's looking for - this is a brand new site, there is no data from anywhere else to upload. I know everyone else on here will wonder at my stupidity but I have ABsolutely no idea what I'm doing wrong!

what is the error that you get we will need that in order to help you better.

Thanks,

Ami

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Hi,

This could be one of two situations:
  1. The server is misconfigured, and failing to connect via what is called a "filesystem socket". Try putting your domain name in as the mySQL server name, rather than 'localhost'. By doing this you will connect via a "TCP socket" instead, and this has less chance of failing.
  2. It might be that mySQL is hosted on a different server than the web server. Check your hosting control panel to see if it talks about mySQL server names, and the webhost's documentation. You'll need to find out the name of the server where mySQL is, and put that in instead of 'localhost'.

(for the record Ami the error was Could not connect to database-server (Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)) – it was in the topic description)

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Hi Ami,

the error message says that it can't find the sql database -Could not connect to database-server (Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)) .

The trouble is I am out of my depth and would happily pay the money to get it installed by OC but I don't even know where to look for the database name etc. I have tried to set up a database on my hosting package and it says it has done it

I have the username and password from them but even then I'm lost - I've tried putting them in the install form but it just comes up with that error message.

I know that I'll be fine once I get past this, it's just I'm way out of my depth!

thanks

Ah I did not see the topic description as I clicked on the topic from the main forum page.
Now I think I have another suggestion for ocf - topic description in the topic view.
It could be that a database was not created as that does need to be created before the install.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

when you created it it should have asked for a name, userrname and password. If you have cpanel like me you will need to create the database and after that is created make a user for that database.

you will need to use the same ftp info you used to upload the ocportal install files in the install when it asks for them.

Oh dear. I'm using heart internet and it has a good and clear control panel - from what I can see, it lets me add databases but not create them. I'm assuming that I now have to get hold of mysql, learn how to use it, create a database then add it?

It all sounds mighty complicated - I think I might be under-qualified to use this!

You can ask your host how to create a database.

is this your host?
UK Reseller Hosting, Multiple Domain Hosting, Personal Hosting and Domains: Heart Internet

I was looking at their demo and no wonder your having trouble.
When creating a database they only have username and password so I am not sure what it makes the database name.

Yes that's what I'm up against. For a new user it's pretty confusing.

I need to get clear in my head what I want in my database - it's going to be a portal but I thought that I would be able to just install OC and build it as i went - not as simple as that, as I now understand!

well if your host had a better database creation tool it might have been easier.
It could be taht the username is also the name of the database so try that when installing.

Hi Ami

I've sent them a ticket asking them what to do - I'll see what they send back. I might be dim but I'm pretty sure I should be able to create a database from their control panel somehow. I've told them the info I need and what I want it for - I'll see what they come back with.

thanks very much for your patience and your help

How's it going Claire?

Now I think I have another suggestion for ocf - topic description in the topic view.

Yes, this is an oversight - it will be 3.2.
