Hi. I have been getting a large amount of error e-mails from one of my sites, that seem to be something looking for pages of a catalog that no longer exists. they read like:

This e-mail from Self Publisher! Magazine was generated automatically and sent to you due to your notification settings. You should not reply directly.
An error occurred at:
http://www.selfpubmag.com/catalogues/category/archive/hof/f/firebird-press.htm?order=43+DESC

The full error details follow:

The requested resource does not exist. (Referrer is: http://www.selfpubmag.com/, User agent is: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:14.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/14.0.1)

I have looked all over for any active links left over that would point to those URLS that anyone would be clicking, but I cannot find them in anything. is there anything you can see that would give a clue as to where the links might exist that are being accessed and tossing the error? could it be a web crawler that is seeking old pages? 1-2 of them would not matter, but 100-200 a day are coming in.

To be honest it is just best to turn off the notification (in your own account's settings). It's called "Missing resource referenced". Otherwise you will have to try and get every bot that knows an old link to stop looking at every outdated page.

By default, this notification is not enabled for anyone.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
