The user should receive emails, yes.
The error emails may explain it.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

The payment works via something called IPN. CRON actually isn't involved.

Basically it works like this:
  1. User signs up via website, and website stores details
  2. User is directed to PayPal and PayPal is told the subscription ID being paid for
  3. PayPal informs website via IPN (calling ecommerce.php) script
  4. ecommerce.php script informs eCommerce product, in this case the subscription code
  5. The subscription code sends out emails, and upgrades the member to their new usergroup

So it looks like something in this chain is not working. A first step is to see if ecommerce.php comes up on your web access logs (should be accessible from your web hosting control panel).

Sorry, I should have said ecommerce.php not cron_bridge.php! All this talk of cron got into my head.
I've edited my post.

CRON isn't involved in the purchase process at all.

If 'data/ecommerce.php' doesn't show up at all that suggests PayPal is never contacting your server when the sale happens. If you log into your PayPal account there's a website integration section (it might be called something slightly different) and you can see logs of any errors PayPal might have had doing the IPN process (e.g. if it can't find your server, or got a bad response).

Sometimes PayPal can be delayed in contacting that script, but not be more than an hour. Sometimes the time for the email to be sent can be a few days if the buyer pays by check but data/ecommerce.php should still show up in the access logs earlier than that.

No CRONs definitely not involved. CRON sends welcome emails to new members, maybe that's what's confusing you - but this is a separate feature, and not related to the mails sent out when a usergroup subscription is performed.
