Moving forward with Composr

ocPortal has been relaunched as Composr CMS, which is now in beta. ocPortal 9 will be superseded by Composr 10.

Head over to compo.sr for our new site, and to our migration roadmap. Existing ocPortal member accounts have been mirrored.

When viewing a file, any way to get a similar/related to that file?

I realize v10 is on its way (very very nice update btw) but after trying this out on v10 I notice it is not possible out the box there either (compared to v9). Hopefully this could be brought over to the new version as well.

Id like when viewing a file, to get a similar/related to that file/download.

Something like how Google Play is now doing (just 1 example), where if you are viewing a particular app/file, it shows you other relevant/similar apps/files.

I have been looking through the code but can't seem to figure out how to make that work (if it can even be done - i'm hoping though).

Thanks in advanced. So far this system is doing everything else I need just missing this one somewhat important piece

Hi,

Thanks for your kind words re v10.

I would like to see related content added, but it's not currently a feature. Here it is on the tracker:

No problem on v10 :). You do some excellent work. I did find a few minor bugs when testing that I will be reporting soon. Overall though it seems like a solid upgrade from the current version.

And thanks for the quick reply. That is unfortunate that it cannot be done currently, I was hoping maybe with something like ocfilter maybe, plus there are tags (keywords) already with the downloads? Code it directly into the downloads.tpl? I tried doing something similar with the downloads carousel and forcing a filter but that did not seem to work (maybe I did the coding wrong? - [ block param="10" zone="_SEARCH" filter="4,5,6,7" title="Similar Downloads"]main_downloads_carousel[/ block] )

Unfortunately I do not have 200gbp to donate at this time. edit: changed block code here so it would post

I think probably something could be done now, but it would be ugly and not very good. In particular we don't just want to naively pull in everything with similar tags, we want to try and find the closest matches in a vector space (fancy way of saying - get maximal tag match).

Non-joined user

Being new here I searched upgrade and found this thread.

I've never used OCP before and I wish to.

Is v10 a direct and normal upgrade from the current version or should I wait and build a new site directly in v10?

Thanks.

The best advice would be to get started with ocPortal v9 now, since it may be a little while yet before the final Composr v10 release is done. In general, if you start with ocPortal v9 now, you won't have to relearn everything when Composr v10 is released. In v10 a few addons are renamed, there are some new options, and the UI has a fresher look. But the overall layout and organization of v10 will be very much the same as v9.

The v10 upgrade should be a fairly normal upgrade. With v10 in alpha testing now, there is no upgrader yet. The only things I can think of that might be an issue are custom blocks and modules, custom templates and css, and existing v9 menus.

If you make any custom blocks or modules for v9, they may need some minor changes to work with v10. I believe everything currently available in the addons download area is already ported over to work with v10 so there shouldn't be any problems with existing addons.

Custom templates and css based on v9 default files may override new features that might be in the v10 default files. Though technically possible, it shouldn't be a problem for the vast majority of ocPortal users.

In v10, the default horizontal menu in the header area of the web page is now a complete and fully automatically generated menu (by default). This should do away with the need for manually created side menus. If side menus exist in a v9 installation, they may end up being redundant if the upgrader doesn't allow the removal of these existing menus.

And more of a note for Chris:
For blocks and modules in v10 that have been renamed, I would assume the upgrader will at least be able to sift through the database and the comcode pages and custom templates stored on disk and automatically rename any references to renamed blocks, modules, and zones. The upgrader should also be able to find users' custom overrides that need to be renamed. For example, if I had a sources_custom/ocf_groups.php override, the upgrader should know ocf_groups.php file is now cns_groups.php and automatically rename the override file. Or maybe present a list of files with checkboxes to allow the admin to have the final say on which files get renamed. And possibly an option to look for menus defined in existing comcode pages/panels and display a list of these menus with checkboxes so the admin doing the upgrade can choose which existing menus can remain and which menus can be safely removed from those pages/panels. Possibly a pre-upgrade script or a 'Pre-Upgrade Check' button in the upgrader to identify these situations and allow admins to prepare any changes that might be needed (especially for overrides) before they begin the upgrade/migration.
