guest view but not download

I was wondering if anyone had found a setting anywhere that I haven't yet where we can make it possible for guests to view download categories without actually being able to download the files there.

I figured I could make it so members would have to pay like just 1 point to download files in the downloads categories then guests wouldn't be able to but making members pay points for all downloads no matter the amount is not what I would like my site to do.

Greetings!

When you edit/create a download category, scroll down to the bottom of the page. You should see a collapsed category called Permissions. Just click on the expander arrow to make it open up.

In there you'll see permission types for all your member groups. Just change Guest to "Read Only". That should do the trick.

You can test this out by su-ing in as a guest via typing "Guest" in that little white box at the bottom of your site screen.

That's odd…

I don't have it so guest can view the downloads section on my site, but can see that there are downloads, but I figured read only would grant just that.

Hopefully someone more knowledgable than me can come in and save the day. I even just did a complete search in the admin zone, even looking in the dreaded permissions tree… and nada on my end.

Solution would probably be to use the main_download_tease block, that's what this was designed for … i.e. let them see what's there via block.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thanks for trying, really appreciate that. :)

Now that's workable, is there a template or a core file I can alter to make the block only show like 5 results at a time?
