installation help

Hello, I am just starting out with the ocportal and I am having trouble finding a setting, I think.

When I visit mydomain.com I have only a blank page

I need to also type in the index.php, is there a way to force the portal to redirect to the index.php or something?

You need to set up a redirect with cpanel. Its under  Domains / Redirects.

By default, .html and .htm pages will load before a .php page.

If you have an existing index.html or index.htm on your server, delete or rename them.

I will check back later and see if there are any more idea's. But for now

This is just a default installation of ocportal, I wouldn't think it would be this difficult, but it is.

if you check the earlier thread I posted on my host's site you will see the code I have added to my .htaccess file….

Any idea's why this code works in IE but not firefox?

Can anyone verify that the website works in either or both of these browsers?

Is mine the only one?

http://rats-4-adoption.com/

One of the other customers on my host told me I should read this page and try some of these tricks but It seams more likely that I am missing a setting in ocportal or that it is something else simple that is causing it. It might take me awhile to read that entire page and try all those things.

I noticed that this website redirects you to the start.htm page if you delete everything but ocportal.com in the address bar, can anyone tell me how this done? maybe I can use the same trick with my own site?

I am used to working with vBulletin and in the admin area there is a section where you can chose the default page that reads, If a user visits your CMS site without specifying a page, they will view this page. and you can enter the page and save it as the default. Can anyone tell me if there is a setting like this in ocportal?

You're .htaccess doesn't quite rite. Try this (its based on what I have in my .htaccess).

Code

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^rats-4-adoption\.com$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.rats-4-adoption\.com$
RewriteRule ^/?$ "http\:\/\/rats-4-adoption\.com\/pg\/start" [R=301,L]

A few things spring to mind looking at this thread, but the one that strikes home above any other is the old saying about "…taking a sledge hammer to crack a nut!"

  • Although it is commendable to talk to your hosts about apparent problems you are experiencing with your site and its set-up, perhaps your first port of call should have been to here, ocPortal's own forum
  • I've taken some time to read the posts in the host's forum and the advice you've been offered is generally non-specific to ocPortal and flip-flops all over the place. The only good bit of advice you had there was from somebody who suggested you check out the forums in ocPortal
  • Hacking away at the .htaccess file without first checking the two that come bundled with the default installation (plain.htaccess and recommended.htaccess) is a good way to really screw things up. Look closely at the two I've mentioned and the very least you'll learn is how they are constructed for ocPortal

I've checked the site using the URL rats-4-adoption.com and it works fine in the latest versions of the following browsers:
  • IE
  • FF
  • Chrome
  • Opera

I have screencaps of each, but I don't think it is necessary to have to 'prove' that they work for me. Take my word for it.

All problems you encounter with this CMS can mostly be handled in these forums, as you will almost always get a response from seasoned users - AND - if the regulars here don't jump in and answer your cries for help, you can bet a member of staff (THE DEVELOPERS) will quickly get to the nub of the matter.

Enjoy your journey …

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Thanks again for the detailed responce, I only wish somsbody would have mentioned this information 12 hours ago, it could have saved me allot of troubleshooting time. Reading either the Basic or advanced  installation tutorials do not help with no mention of this htaccess situation. So I guess any newbie should have noticed it straight off. But your right, after I looked closely the solution was there. The only mention of it at all is in the host section way at the bottum under the PHP area? Yea, I should have looked there first. Just exactlly what I needed was another verble bashing after all this, I wont forget my experience with ocportal.
