is it posible to have 2 ocportals connect to the same database?
I know it is with ipb as you just copy the config.php file to both ipb installs and change the url to match where it is at.
I was wondering if ocPortal could do the same.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Hi, no that wouldn't work.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I am having an issue with my installer and the database. It says:

Unfortunately a query has failed [SELECT group_id,group_name FROM phpbb_groups WHERE group_single_user=0 OR group_id=1] [<strong>Table 'db218772802.phpbb_groups' doesn't exist</strong>]

Please advise

Please check the details you gave for the phpBB integration refer to a correct installed phpBB forum. In particular, make sure you specified the correct database name, and table prefix, and that phpBB is installed already.

I did install it and it took all of my database settings and it works independently (phpBB2 that is). It is on a seperate SQL database though. Is this the correct way to integrate it or should they share the same one?

It's fine for them to be separate. Please look closely at all the options in the installer - you'll see there is an ability to define the databases separately between the site and the forum.

I'm pretty sure I did that. I went through the process 3 times and even attempted refreshing due to timeout possibilities, but still got it. When I use the built-in forum, it works beautifully. I still have the forum (phpBB2) on a separate sub domain, and I'm sure that I can link reference it if I need to, but I really wanted the integration to work for me. I am beginning to wonder if its the prefix that is the issue for the database. Could that be a possibility?

I almost forgot. Thanks a lot for the help Chris. I really appreciate the prognosis on my situation.

Hi,

I've just gone into the installer myself because I couldn't remember our wording. You need to say 'yes' to this question on step 3:
Do you intend to: join an existing network of multiple sites that share a forum, and/or have your forum and portal data each in a different database, and/or host your database on a different server to the web server?
