How would one go about creating a whole integer profile field, but limit the entry to a specified range of numbers?

I.e., a profile field for a user to submit their age (as an optional, not mandatory field) but reject entries that fall outside the above perameters (as an example, anything between 18 and 99 is accepted, otherwise, no).

If I use the current profile field option of whole integer, user would theoretically be able to fill the line with an unrealistic quantity of numbers.

An alternative would be to use the list function, but there isn't enough space in the field to list all the number combinations (expanding that would also work)

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice

There's no easy answer there. One thing you could do, is to add some Javascript to the JAVASCRIPT_VALIDATION template that applies extra checks if the form field is named as per whatever name comes up for this new field (e.g. field_17). Of course to do that you need to know Javascript.

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Ah…I had better leave that to the professionals for the time.

I would just put that forth as a feature request for the moment, to be dealt with at some other more convenient time.

(Or maybe there's a way to increase the input length of the 'a value chosen from a list' field to accept more option choices perhaps?)
