Setting up a members only site for photo and doc saving and having issues.

Howdy folks, I hope I might get a bit of help here and do not look to bad by having to ask.
First let me tell you how I come to use this product. I leased an html chat roleplay site. The fellow I leased it from has lots of old worn out programs he either does not know how to share, cant, or just being stubborn.
One of the programs he uses to store photos/avatars and documents for users of his other sites is an old Fileman program. Creating folks a storage folder on his site so that images can be used in the chat rooms and documents linked to the entrance pages.
Anyhow, I looked and looked, not being able to afford fileman or the old SiteMaster programs. I was told about a webhosting that offered a lot of programing similar (yes the dreaded cpanel, at least my opinion) I talked to the sales rep a few days explaining my needs and was told the ownCloud program is what I needed and would work. Needless to say, it does not handle my wants.
Searching through the self installing programs, trying almost all of them, I found this ocPortal, liked the looks http://moondate.org/Mess7 (ran out of test names) and was like excited. It allows me to hot link the pics to my chat site.
My problems however are probably simple or at least I hope so.
..
...
Problem one ... When I go to upload documents, it will not allow me to upload HTML types, how can I correct this as most of mine and other simple minded folks save ours as HTML?
....
Problem two... I created a test user name, logged out, tried to log in as that name and password, and it says no such user, yet I see it in the data base.
///
///
Any help on this?

Well the member issue is solved and fixed.
Short of how do you approve them to create a separate gallery and can it be kept from public eyes?
Still reading all the different docs, not such an easy thing but I love the look and feel of it.

First of all, welcome to the community and the forums.

When you say you're trying to upload HTML files, can you give an example?  Usually if your wanting to share or create a page it is done in a couple of different ways.  If you wanting just a page that is link in to your site it's probably easier to use the "Add Page Wizard" in your "Admin Zone / Structure / Add Page Wizard"  If it is a document for says tutorials, FAW or such you could use the WIKI for creating those.  However, if you're actually wanting the ability to upload HTML documents for people to download, view etc, you'll need to add HTML files to your allowed download types by going to:
"Admin Zone / Setup / Configuration / Security options / Uploaded files / Valid file types"

To answer your second question are you sure you're using the same case on your password?  They are case sensitive.  If that doesn't work, find the user in the Member directory and edit the password field.  You said you setup a test member.  The software creates a user name Test when installed, so if you tried creating a member named test then it probably didn't create the new entry.  Again, find the member Test or test in the member directory and edit the member profile changing the password.

Galleries do allow for setting permissions but by member group not individual.  There's probably a way of doing it but one of the more knowledgeable members's around here will have to answer that one.

Chipster.

Thank you so MUCH! It took a few times to get the programing to take it, but it now uploads the htm and html which is GREAT.

Now hopefully one of the others will help me figure out the other little deal.

And thanks for the welcome. I really do like the way the pages look and hope to make a killer site out of it for my members.

Hello welcome to ocPortal and forums. Your question about galleries is what Chipster already have write down, its based on groups.

You could make a special group who members have the permission to upload pictures in a own gallerie under a main galerie.

Main gallerie —–
                        |
                         —- member one
                        |
                         —- member two

Thank you Harry.

While exploring that option, which works, it taught me an issue with how I have the program set up.
At least I think so from the way I am seeing the layout.
I have this program set up in a sub folder and not as my SITE/Service so to speak(guess root).
I am still reading all the tutorials and such but I think if I had it set up in root, I could create Zones/subdomains(?) for my users who then could have absolute privacy to their stuff.

Pretty big learning curve for me here.

Thanks for the welcome as well!

Hi Revmoon, you have ocportal installed into a submap under the root. Oke, you could setup a new zone in a submap under the install map. Use the Home
Admin Zone Structure Zones There Add zone to make a new zone within your install map.

I think there may be more ways to skin the cat on this one. It might help to have a clearer understanding what you are trying to accomplish.

I do not RPG at all so I am at a loss of how it is done. If you could explain how it is you do what you do normally we might be better able to explain how (if possible and I feel it probably is) to accomplish your tasks.

particularly what are the html files for and how are they used is probably the most confusing part?

Hello Duck.

First the images. I can load my own to my server under separate folders or root and link them to use in the html chat format like <img src= http://moonspro.com/bm3.jpg> which is fine for me, however I don't want to be loading up my members avatars. They  need their own private section for such. Several host a lot of images to make avatars out of as well. Code for actual persona would be like. <img src=http://moonspro.com/bm3.jpg align=left><br>Boskman Larel Heitik<br>chief..

or something like that

Some of the samples on how we link can be found by looking at a few rooms on
Gorreborn.com/whochat
Gor Reborn | Member's Page | Storage, Pull Down Editor, Game site, Private room is also an example from the upper links.
A room linked to a page that is good example is this page Alar Laager @ Gor Reborn  (which has many of my own pages linked within on another server)

I want to be able to allow my users a place they can store their docs/links  and pictures that folks just cant look into that are members of the same category so to speak… LOL, hope I have not confused you anymore than I have myself.

And I tried doing a separate zone for a user, but it still linked his gallery under the home one.

I attempted to to use an password file via the server on one media file folder, did not work.

ok I still don't fully understand how  RPG via chat works completely. I looked around from the links you sent and got a little lost from time to time and I can't find anywhere where it explains (for a complete beginner) how to play.

But it seems to me that a good portion of it can be run quite easily in the current release of ocPortal using the built in chat and other parts of the system for the html stuff.

Personal galleries though does not allow the type of permissions you hoped for at this time so I went into the feature tracker to put in a request for it (as I think adding the ability to share/restrict content to your friends is a good idea) and did a search and sure enough these features have already been built and completed for v10 of ocPortal. When that is to be released I don't know but I imagine it is not too far in the distant future.

I was wondering if the ocWorld addon would/could be useful for managing the RPG style games you play? I imagine it might need some tweaking to add in some functionalities you are looking for but asis the base of it might work well.

Again I don't fully understand how a chat RPG game works but I notice from the site you posted there are cities etc on a world map that I assume people move from and to and interact with others in those places. These cities etc could be Portals in ocWorld with landing pages (basically your html pages) with squares (within a portal) representing sections of that city which again can have there own page design so to speak and landing on a square occupied by someone else would allow you to interact with that person. Chat could be in game I suppose or even run externally and then update actions accordingly to that result.

I think a little tweaking to that addon might work well to run the game. The avatar upload/view permission thing could be built into that somehow but it might be better to wait for the v10 version which has the bulk of those requirements already built in then adding adding some code to display users personal galleries items following the permission system already built by Chris would likely be an easy peasy tweak.

Just a thought. I have familiarity with the ocWorld addon and could make a few minor tweaks to it for your case fairly easy.

Hey Duck, thanks again for the suggestion, I shall look at that addon when I get home this evening.
The site link I gave you, along with at least a dozen similar are just based off The Chronicles of Gor, by John Norman. Some sick badly written sci fi, sadly something I have been involved with over 20 years.
Your statement not finding info for beginners struck a cord, I am creating a page for the site dealing with that, thanks.
The homes/rooms are inplace on the leased site, would indeed be something else if I could manage running the site on ocportal, lol.
Most homes have a different culture and seldom interact with the others. The system is totally html CHAT using imaginary phrases and characters, even the fighting parts are typed descriptions that are judged by experienced fighters in the rp environment, and newbies are usually taught by experienced or by reading/watching spars.
Its a world of male dominance, drama and to be honest, a boring waste of time but addicting. If you ever see me on the site, come in and holler and I will try to show a bit. My name is always in a high contrast PINKISH color…BM, The Alar or Larel Heitik and most time found in the The Alars room.
