Changed usergroup names and now there is no promotion target

I edited the usergroup names. I left them in the same order they were. I was not able to find a menu for promotion target after I renamed the groups. Why would this be? The Edit Usergroups table (before I edited the names) showed a promotion target but now that the names are different the promotion column just shows N/A.

I haven't installed the points module so is this the trigger for the promotion target being missing, maybe?

Yes, that would explain it.

As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

What I find interesting about that is that after my original installation the usergroups (which I modified as mentioned above) REGULAR (100), LOCAL (400), OLD TIMER (2500 ), LOCAL HERO (10000 ) all showed a promotion target with the points required to advance to that level.

Now that I changed the names the promotion targets along with points needed to get there are all gone.

Thanks for pointing it out, you're right, it's a bug.

It doesn't actually harm you, but it is a bit confusing.

We shouldn't show promotion stuff in the choose-what-to-edit table if the points addon is not installed, and we should ignore the associated fields on edit rather than wiping them. We'll fix.

 Your welcome!

I notice that the Log in box naturally shows up on the Forum and Rules pages (left side) as well as when one tries to access certain features like Unread Posts, Recently Read Topics and Private Topics (maybe in other places I have not found yet?). I could probably remove them from view if I wanted or maybe it is just easier to leave the option of joining so some (limited) additional features are available to the one who joined and logged in.

So let me get the promotion thing straight here …for me, in my situation, with membership possible on my site (although not with any associated points accumulation that would result in a defined progressive promotion path) all movement to any other usergroup will be only as granted by admin or someone who has that authority to manually advance them and not as an earned and automatic promotion process like in a full ocPortal installation.

Yeah. If you want to get rid of the member bar, edit panel_top in the welcome zone (it's actually shared across multiple zones).
