Catalogues and historical data

Hi,
On our current car enthusiasts site there is a hand written register functionality.
It is used to allow car owners to register their car and associated details. Then only the member who created the entry can make changes but anyone else can browse. Admins can break the association for when cars get a new owner.

I am thinking that I could use ocportals built in Catalogue functionality to capture and maintain the data - anyone else used it for this ?

One thing that appears to be missing is the ability to create some pages that show the user charts or analytics on the data, eg all the cars grouped by colour as a bar chart etc - is this true or am I missing something ?
