I have found quite a bit of info on Catalogues and quite a bit of info on Templates but I don't seem to be finding any info on Catalogue Templates.

What I need to know is, is it possible to change the layout of the list view of a catalogue and then is it possible to change the layout of the item view of a catalogue.

For a little background I am trying to rebuild a non-profit website for a Cat Sanctuary over here in the US. To be honest I hate most of the current site but the format for the list of cats as well as the display of the individual cats need to stay somewhat the same.

So for the list view of the currant site please see:
Welcome to the Sundance Ranch Sanctuary
I think I would prefer to have 3 columns and the names underneath the thumbnail. Also please note that if you click on the picture of any of the cats in the list it goes to that cats catalogue record.

For an individual view of the currant site please see:
Welcome to the Sundance Ranch Sanctuary
You will notice that the Name is Large above the picture and the Picture is also larger than the thumbnail on the previous page.

I guess my question is, is any and hopefully all of this possible? If so can someone point me in the right direction? My guess is that this would all be done with template edits, if so which 2 templates would I need to start playing with.

If all else fails I would be willing to pay someone to make the changes for me. I am not a programmer so if this is not something that a lay person would not be able to do in a few days please let me know what kind of cost I am looking at.

Thanks for any assistance provided…

Hey Rick! Is it a must that you use the catalogue system or would CEDI or parent/child comcode pages work as well?

SD,

That is probably a real good question but since I have never used either I have no idea. Guess I now have something else to go research. Can either of the above mentioned items do what it is that I am trying to do? and if so are they easier to format? Thanks for you input!!!

Hey Rick! I guess it boils down to dynamically generated content (catalogue) versus static (CEDI/Comcode). I can already see an issue trying to meet your goal with the catalogue. Here is the output template code for the catalogue listing

Code

<tr>
   <th>{FIELD*}</th>
   <td>{VALUE}</td>
</tr>

As you can see, it's just a repeating set of table rows producing the following:

Beyond some colouring, maybe background image addition, font face change, there is not much else that can (easily) be done here. Using the CEDI/Comcode angle, you could more or less recreate what the site has now, but you would be required to enter each feline statically per page. This may not be a bad thing however, just a different thing. By the looks of it, that is what is being done now anyway…

Lemme see if I can get a quick mock up done over the next couple to days on my test site…

SD,

Again thanks for the reply. I am looking at the CEDI and I can see how it could be used but as you said it would all have to be done statically. My hope was to create a catalogue and be able to enter each cat in to it's own record, I had hoped to have about 10 picture fields as well so that they could be seen from different angles and settings. Also once the cat has been adopted there would be a Yes/No field that could be checked which would flag them as being adopted and hopefully filtered from the main group. I also wanted to add an owner blog field that would be a URL field so that when clicked it would link them to the owners blog so that people can see how their favorite cats are now doing. This would be the best format for the owner of the sancuary as they would just access the catalogue for the cats and add a new record or edit a previous one. The probelm with this is the layout is all wrong both in the list view and the record view.

I will keep playing with the ideas that you have provided. Again thanks for the help.

One other question concerning Catalogues, is there any filtering options available. The idea is to be able to set up a filter for lets say the sex field. In that way I could add links for just the Male cats or just the female cats. Also it would be nice to show all of the cats or just the available cats or just the adopted cats. The catalogue system is described as a visual database, I have done quite a bit of database development in the past and one of the main/strongest features of a database is to filter the data.

There's currently no filtering, except through the search module (you can do an advanced catalogue search and filter on any field marked as searchable).
Using the category tree is one alternative; having Male and Female subcategories for example.

SD,

Just wanted to let you know not to waste any time on this. I really appreciate the help but decided for my client I really wanted this done in the Catalogue system so decided to pay for it. Chris whipped something up with the templates in very little time at all. Still have one or two little things to tweak but thought that you would like to see what we have so far. Please note that the site is not tied to a domain yet as the domain is currently in use. It is only accessible by IP. See the link below for a view of what is possible with Catalogue Templates:

Neeed a Home - Sundance Ranch Feline Sanctuary

This is the list view, you will notice that the names are in Pink and Blue based on weather the cat is Male or female. Also notice that when you click on the picture it goes to the record instead of viewing the full size picture. Also check out this link:

Sammy - Sundance Ranch Feline Sanctuary

You will notice the buttons on the bottom of the page. They only appear when you fill in a URL field in the catalogue.

When we are done I will post the files and instructions so that you can make use of them as well. I am sure this would be very useful for many of us.
