Silly question #2

Greetings,

Ok I know that you have the rules feature where you have info that shows up for the 1st time someone goes in a forum. But this is completely different.

Ok lets say I go into a forum. Instead of having the info pop out only the 1st time I go in, I'd like to have info posted above the forums all the time. The structure would look like info box then threads listed below. The info box can be an a collapsible box. I am posting this as a silly question incase it can be done, I am just too silly to have figgured it out yet :P. If it is not a silly question, please feel free to move it.

You see, in AEF I have for my RP forums (each RP forum is it's own nation/Land) I have info on the land with a map, so they see this info each time they are in a forum. Very easy and nice for my members, limits the searching they have to do. So I have to wonder is this possible with OCF, and if so, how do you do it.

I am attaching a pic of a forum with info box above topics to show what I mean, however this is not a pic of a RP forum. THose info boxes are much larger lol.

Should be doable by including the rules in the description line of your forum, or, if they are static, create a comcode page with your rules and include it in your description line like:

Code

[include]rules_page_name_here[/include]

"no violence, no hate, no pain, no enemies
just peace, unity, tolerance and love" - The Beloved

Hmm.. I'll try that…

Thanks for the tip!

I just hope it doesn't make this description in the forum listings lol.

Edit

Ok I am guessing I still need to learn these comcode functions. Because I made a page entitled Capere, then I went and put in the description

Code

[include]Capere[/include]

And it tells me some nonsense about resource not existing… when I even have said resource linked to main page. I tried varations and no result.

However I also saw that it WOULD put that info right there in the forum listings as well.. which is something I do not want. SO I suppose if such a function don't exist, I'll just do without said function :P.

Yup, see that now. Couple of options:

  1. Ask Chris if he'll consider adding that feature.
  2. If having the rules in the forum container/category would suffice, then simply modify the template (I'd have to look around to see which one) and remove the description for the container/category from forum view.
  3. Put a pinned/sticky post in the forum(s) that require rules.

As for the not found, it might be because the comcode page was created in a different zone (ie. site/welcome instead of forum). Two options:

  1. Create the comcode page in the forum zone (New: forum:Capere).
  2. Add the param tag to your include:

Code

[include param="zone_name_here"]Capere[/include]

"no violence, no hate, no pain, no enemies
just peace, unity, tolerance and love" - The Beloved

Ah ok… so things that you would want to use in the forums should be made in the forums section… now why didn't I think of that lol.

Yeah, there's plenty of options to do what I want, including the pinned topic, so admittedly this is not something that I MUST have. It is just something that was nice having, and I was wondering if it was possible. So thanks much for your help!

Hi mythus,

It can be done with a template edit of the 'OCF_FORUM' template. I haven't tested this but I think you could add some Tempcode like this…

Code

{+START,IF,{$EQ,{ID},3}}
{$LOAD_PAGE,Capere,zone_name_here}
{+END}

I've written that so it would apply to only forum ID#3.

Ah IPB has that option as well. Maybe this should be a feature added to ocf?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

So, if I am understand this right, I would change the 3 to match the id of the forum correct?

Capere is simply the first board I am trying this on, but this is something I would be using with every forum… a different message containing different information of course.

On a side note (yet related) I think it would be more adventagous to have the rules feature you already have do this by default, or as an option to do this.. instead on the first time only option… have the rules above the forums all the time. I think that way no one can say "Well… I da N00b and can't find a rules link… so I don't knows rulz". Of course they could claim they can't read… but that would be silly… to say the least…

Edit: I must mention, I have no idea what tempcode is or where you put in temp codes….. I am just now getting into the basics with comcode lol…. :$

Ok wow.. I feel dumb lol.

After exploring the editing pages I quickly found where to edit templates and then it dawned on me…

Tempcodes are codes used in templates! Doh!

So yeah, I got that to work. It is lovely! Quite impressive. I wonder though, is there a way to get it to show up in a block? Does the block comcode work in templates? And is there a way to make it collapsable?

IF all the answers are "NO" to these that's fine lol! At least now I know I can put the info in right there in their face where they can't miss it!:P

Edit: Hehe, I got it in a box. Now.. just got to figure out if there's a way to get the box collapsible or not.

With a bit of learning you can do just about anything. Quite a few templates have XHTML that hides stuff. COMCODE_HIDE does, you can probably copy and paste a lot of that code through with just some small changes.

I don't have time to explain in detail myself though.

Yeah, that's fine. I don't expect you to have time to teach me how to make such edits! You have many more people to help, and have to manage making ocPortal at the same time. But I am most surprised and pleased to have gotten your help!

I am sure I can get it with trial and error lol. After all, I am using a test site to learn on before deploying it on my active site. So it's no big deal lol.

So, thanks so much for the help you've already given!
