Been doing some searching in the tutorials but haven't found an answer to this… Can ocPortal have 2 separate forums sharing the same member base and database? Kind of like a MSN (2 sites, 1 forum) but in reverse (1 site, 2 forums). For example: Fictional website for operating systems with 2 forums. Forum one is for Linux users, Forum two is a totally separate forum for Windows users. Both forums use the same database and members. I know it could be done with 1 forum using usergroups and permissions, but I'm interested in doing something a little different. I run a forum for a programming language in Linux. I have a general forum for questions and answers, but I'm wanting to have a totally separate forum for developers and their projects, with each developer having it's own forum group and hence it's own forums under that. This way the general question and answer forum isn't cluttered by the developers forums, but are still accessible by all members.

What if you made a sub directory at the root of your domain call it whatever and the address would look like this … micro.mydomain.com or linux.mydomain.com Then you could install a second ocportal and create a redirect for the extra pages It could work but it would mean 2 databases |

I was looking for a simple way of separating unique foruns but keeping the member base the same for both. I think all this is turning into a moot point anyway because as soon as I add another usergroup the "Permissions Tree Editor" grinds to a halt. On my setup, 21 usergroups is the limit. I have another thread started about this issue.

You would use one forum, but you would make your forums within it. Make those forums virtual roots and use the power of redirects! I have a whole post about that here! I was planning on making a CEDI post about all that in the community documentation… but life happened…. Still trying to catch up from said life events lol.

View topic: [SOLVED!] How do I make Zone themes work throughout the zone? - ocPortal View topic: Announcement forum for multiple virtual host forums? - ocPortal View topic: [SOLVED in BETA2!] Redirections in ocPortal 6 beta 1 - ocPortal Anways, with virtual roots and redirects you can emulate having two (or more) seperate forums on one site, even though in truth you have only one forum. Using virtual roots and redirects you can set up menu links to your virtual rooted forums, and that would be all they'd see, making it appear like they are on another different forum, sharing your site and member database. You just need to remember to set up zones for those virtual roots as well

I've saved those links for later when I'm ready to start this. I think I'll wait though until V8 is out and I've migrate over to that. No need to create more migration headaches.
