Well-settled

Hello,

I set up a new site on my server. This time I decided just to use the built in chat module and test out its features. I like the improvements you are adding but in 5.0.3 on this site there seems to be some things wrong with conversations.

In my Chat system configuration screen I set my settings like in the attached screenshot.

Hmm, anyway, I tried to attach a screenshot but the forum didn't like me selecting a file, closed the window and posted my message instead.

Basically, I go into my admin account, start a conversation to a different user in a different browser, or even on a different computer, and a window comes up but none of the posts display anything in the message window below. There is nothing. The sounds work. Things seem like they should work but they don't. I can End conversation, download the logs and its there.

I am using the built in theme but customized the colours.

Also, it seems clicking the name in chat still takes the user to the profile instead of opening the private message box. I am using OCF.

Trying to attach again.

Hello,

Thanks for your report. If this is still happening in the next release please remind us, but I think it may have been fixed in 5.1 beta 1 already.
Except usernames in some cases do still go to profiles, it's probably designed that way so if you're already in a conversation with someone you can use the link to find out more about them.

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

You are right, it kind of makes sense in a way that the name links to their profile, except that there is an option to change it which doesn't work. That option isn't really that important to me for it to be working.

But the conversation message box not working is kind of important to be working on this site and it just doesn't work. I don't get any errors or anything that I can see. I will check if I can figure out how to fix it. I don't know if it is fixed in 5.1 beta 1 or not but maybe that will be too different to use the fixes even if it is fixed. I don't use it on a live site but I will check. I only tested out the XMPP chat with it and I don't remember what it did exactly.

I figured I shouldn't use the beta on a live site which people have to use to communicate and plan things because of the WYSIWYG problems you mentioned. If there are problems with that it probably just wouldn't be a very good first time ocPortal experience for them, or me actually since I don't really have any other ocPortal websites that anyone else but me uses. But maybe I should just give it a shot and see how it holds up?

Maybe the performance enhancements alone would prove useful. I am sometimes getting a "Premature end of script headers" error on my server. PHP error reporting is off so I don't know why. Server is running PHP 5.2.17, as suexec with fcgi so maybe thats what it doesn't like. Soon will update to 5.3.

Yesterday I tried the SVN install again but chat was a little messed up. I just did a svn up and you have added some new things so maybe its fixed by now. Amazing work! I have a feeling this is going to start a new era for ocPortal for some reason.

"Premature end of script headers" could be some kind of script time-out problem.

I'm trying to get 5.1 out as quick as possible, but things have got very delayed due to all the stuff I'm trying to get in, and in particular work on performance for sites with large amounts of data has turned into a time black hole (but finally finished tonight, just about). I don't really want to prematurely announce anything here but the aim has been to make incredibly large sites run smoothly on ocPortal.

But one thought comes to mind – if XMPP is on, ocPortal IM won't be working as IM is not supported by the XMPP addon and the addon overrides all the chat systems functionality. I suppose it's a flaw that we haven't disabled the site-wide IM for that case.
If it's not related to XMPP if you give me a link/account to test on I might be able to track down what's wrong.

Yeah, no worries. I am not trying to rush you and I don't think anyone else should be either, no matter the cost or price. I am just so excited about how good it looks. Take your time. Nobody can ever be in a rush for great software. Great work should take time. For this beautiful piece of work you deserve taking the time to make sure its perfect how you want it. ;)

On the site I am just putting up it actually wasn't running the XMPP module but you are right, I did check that on another install and it does disable IM. So that isn't the cause in this case. I kind of gave up trying to set it up for the time being. No worries about the chat, unless of course you actually wanted to see what was wrong to help developing things. If it helps then I can send you whatever you like, just let me know what it is exactly and how to get it to you and I will send it on over. They can deal with it for now and wait for 5.1 so you don't have to spend time on other things that are outdated and don't matter anymore.
