Thought i would post here for a change

Question 1:

I am on a hosted server, on which I can back up (RAID) my site and contents. However, if I want to protect the information my site has generated (members, usernames, passwords, forums etc) can I just save the databasse that OCP is using for the site to a third party? then in case of problems, reintroduce that database to a new install and restore the content of the site? Or is it more complicated than that? (This is an example where I may wish to change hosts of my website).

Question 2:

On my portal page (first page in the site before I reach the 'front' page) can I disable the menu at the top of the page so people can ONLY enter by clicking on an agreement button?

Sorry guys… I have a lot of questions (and am also testing your forum parameters:$…)

Our backup tutorial can answer this better than I can here.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Yes it did - and I think we posted together as I edited my question at the same time as you replied (part 2)…

Sorry Chris…

For part 2 of your question there are 2 things.
One change the zone permissions as those links are zones and they will only see the links to the zones they have permissions too.
The other way is to edit the top template and take out the zone code.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

If the links only appear when you move off the front page of the welcome zone, rather than if you join, tou could do something like this…

Change:

Code

      {+START,LOOP,ZONES}
         {+START,IF,{$AND,{$NEQ,{CODE},},{$NEQ,{CODE},docs}}}
            {+START,IF,{$GET,PREVIOUS_ZONE}}|{+END}
            <a {+START,IF,{$IS_STAFF}}title="{!SPECIAL_CLICK_TO_EDIT#}" onclick="Javascript: if (!window.handleZoneClick) return true; if (!event) event=window.event; return handleZoneClick(this,event,'{CODE*;}');" {+END}{+START,IF,{$NOT,{$GET,PREVIOUS_ZONE}}}accesskey="Z" {+END}href="{$PAGE_LINK*,{CODE}}" class="{$?,{$EQ,{$ZONE},{CODE}},current_zone,non_current_zone}">{TITLE}</a>
            {$SET,PREVIOUS_ZONE,_true}
         {+END}
      {+END}
in the TOP template for your theme to:

Code

      {+START,IF,{$MATCH_KEY_MATCH,:start}}
      {+START,LOOP,ZONES}
         {+START,IF,{$AND,{$NEQ,{CODE},},{$NEQ,{CODE},docs}}}
            {+START,IF,{$GET,PREVIOUS_ZONE}}|{+END}
            <a {+START,IF,{$IS_STAFF}}title="{!SPECIAL_CLICK_TO_EDIT#}" onclick="Javascript: if (!window.handleZoneClick) return true; if (!event) event=window.event; return handleZoneClick(this,event,'{CODE*;}');" {+END}{+START,IF,{$NOT,{$GET,PREVIOUS_ZONE}}}accesskey="Z" {+END}href="{$PAGE_LINK*,{CODE}}" class="{$?,{$EQ,{$ZONE},{CODE}},current_zone,non_current_zone}">{TITLE}</a>
            {$SET,PREVIOUS_ZONE,_true}
         {+END}
      {+END}
      {+END}

All I did was add a little bit of extra code around the existing code that filters out the zone menu from the display if the page being viewed matches the page-link of ":start" (the start page in the welcome zone).
