Ok. So I am trying to get authors to work and I have some interesting information, to me atleast.

I have  default installation that I use for debugging my own mistakes so I can see what the system looks like before I break it.

If I go to a user profile before I create an author and click on authors I get an error with the page showing the left hand menu as the entire width of the page.  I would think you would want an error page saying something like "No authors have been configured for this user."

I also have noticed unless I am mistaken that the default special permissions for setting your own author profile is set to ALL of the groups BUT the default location of the edit and view author menu items are on the super member pages.

Sadly enough, neither of these are good for us because even as a newb user when you edit your own profile you can change the ID field to whatever you want and that could totally screw up the authors database let alone have lots of random 'alienated' author entries lying around.

Now sadly I cant figure out how to turn off the authors feature in the profile listing so we are just going to have to live with the broken page.  I tried cheating and creating a supermembercentre:authors page to replace it and it said a resource didnt exist. (So it didnt let me create the page)

Also, when a user does not have an author profile and you are an admin and you try to view their authors page from their profile, you generate a hacking attempt and a hacking email.

I hope I didnt just miss some blatantly obvios thing about authors.  Remember I am working from the bottom up on multiple levels.  What happens if Joe Admin tries to do whatever seems 'obvios' or 'intuitive' and what happens if Joe User does the same.  I've atleast learned about special permissions and page permissions today. :D

I suspect a browser rendering glitch or templating problem, because this is what happens.

Yeah. We're in a difficult position for this kind of thing and have to juggle all kinds of competing design goals. We could have placed menu links on the main site, but then we'd be bloating up the main site - you can place the menu links onto the main site if you wish, you can change the permissions if you wish - you're in the driving seat, and our defaults will always have to be balanced (compromised) unfortunately.

Sadly enough, neither of these are good for us because even as a newb user when you edit your own profile you can change the ID field to whatever you want and that could totally screw up the authors database let alone have lots of random 'alienated' author entries lying around.

We've improved it in 3.

This one's new to me. Could you show me the URL that generates the error? It could be it contains something ocPortal thinks is suspicious.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Hmm.. Strange.  I just checked and your right. It does this on the defualt setting but does what I say on ours.  I wonder what got fubard.  Sorry bout the false alarm.  I could have sworn it was doingit on the default.  I must have lost track of which site I was on.  Is there any way to check easily or is that something that falls under the pay to play side of things? (Just ignore it if it is, I'm not gunnas ask you to say "Sorry, cant help ya over and over again. :D")

This may be us again. When I do it with the default setup it doesnt give that problem.  I am going to have our other admin look at it incase he recognizes something he might have changed.  He said all he changed was CSS stuff and the test site that I am using as the default tester has his css changes and it doesnt have the problem.

Maybe I bumped something somewhere and just didnt know it.

Thing is, is the authors is a default module. I dont even think its possible to delete or modify the module even accidentally.

Later on ill look at comparing the two sites page for page and see if something got changed in the install.  Maybe the webhost ate something.

—– after further research

I found the html problem atleast.

Half way down *OUR* authors.php page, the html starts over. The code:

Code

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

<!--
Powered by ocPortal
2-6.2, Unregistered version
Copyright ocProducts Limited
http://ocportal.com/
-->

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="EN" dir="ltr">
<head>

starts over again half way down.

I'd love ideas on how to even begin going about tracking that down.  I rebuilt all the caches and it does it on both computers so its not my local IE cache. (I even flushed the local IE cache just in case)

This is the page that says "suspected hacking attempt".  i didnt even realize it until I read the repeated code. but yeah it repeats our header/logo after the broken menues.

Anyway, this can be fixed after we pay so no super rush.  The only anoying thing is the hacking attempt emails and since i get all of the emails right now thats not a problem for anyone else except maybe scaring some poor unsuspecting newb. :D
