Now I'm really frustrated. After spending most of the past two weeks trying out this software, installing and uninstalling several times, tweaking the CSS to make my site look right, and finally adding some content, now when I use the recommend site module to invite my users to join, I get an error message saying "Please check back over the form - you did not fill in all fields on the form correctly". All the required fields are correct!

Hi,

I can reproduce the problem. It is happening with the default settings, for logged in users only.

I can see what the cause it also; relatively recent changes to our user interface are forcing you to recommend to at least two people.

Sorry for the bug; I should have a fix for you soon.

I understand bugs are frustrating, but if you've been struggling with this for a long time, or have found other things confusing, please do just report them. Coming up against bugs is inevitable, especially in something as large and ever-evolving as ocPortal. However reported problems are generally all fixed within a few days. Let the stress fall to us getting them fixed.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

So I finally got it to work by opening the site and logging OUT! The captcha appears on the form only when logged out. Doesn't seem to make much sense that I must be logged off to recommend the site.

Thank you for your prompt response, Chris. At this point I'm just trying to get my assistant on board to help with the setup. I realize I can manually add him, but I wanted to make sure the invitation mechanism was working. Once he is in, I will close the site and give him the needed permissions to help me with the rollout.

Thanks again...

It was caused by the toggle between inputting email addresses, and uploading a CSV. In order for that toggle to work, ocPortal has to also toggle the 'required' status of each of those alternative input methods, because one of the input methods has to be filled in. Unfortunately that toggling function was not smart enough to know how to make only one e-mail address field required.

The toggler thing is a standard ocPortal component, but only implemented pretty recently (I think it was new to v9). Unfortunately sometimes when standard components change, there's a risk of bugs popping up in some area we didn't directly test when making that underlying system change.

It worked when not logged in because there was no toggler. We don't provide guests the facility to recommend to a CSV file of recipients, because it is too open to abuse.
