I was reviewing my links in Google and came across the following:

6 of the 10 links are to recommend a specific page (i.e., clicking the the "Recommend to a friend" link in the MAIN_SCREEN_ACTIONS block). I also found many links which include ?wide_print. It seems to me that these should not even be making it into the search engines as they are really just clutter. Google seems to do a good job of sinking them but they shouldn't be there in the first place.

Or am I missing something as usual?

My point is that it really should be fixed in the code. Who would want all those "Recommend to a friend" listings diluting your PR and distracting from the main content. Fortunately, Google seems to sink them in the SERPs but they really should not be there in the first place.

I'll put a nofollow on the print and recommend links from that block, in the next patch release.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
