I'm currently using dreamhost.com shared web hosting and have been having an increasing amount of trouble with them since they had a security breach early last year and a hardware failure on the server that hosts my web sites late last year. I've been experiencing some terrible slow loading times intermittently where it can take 30 to 60 seconds or longer to load a page that would normally load in no more than 5 to 10 seconds. Between the slow page load times and some ongoing issues with their control panel, I've decided now is a good time to look for a new ocPortal-friendly web host.

Does anybody here currently have or has previously had any experience running ocPortal with any Arvixe.com or InMotionHosting.com shared hosting packages? I am currently considering signing up for either the Personal Class Pro shared hosting with Arvixe, or the Business Class Pro shared hosting option with InMotion Hosting. Though I'd be happy to look at other options from other hosts in the $5 to $15 per month range if anybody has any other recommendations... preferably a U.S. based web host or European based host with a U.S. based datacenter for U.S. customers and preferably affordable VPS hosting for when the time comes to upgrade from shared hosting.

Hello Jason,

Elief
is recommended by ocPortal read here for good reasons, and has been my Host of choice for more than four years.

Its c-Panel Installatron  one-click web application can deploy the latest version of ocPortal in just a few seconds with full backups and cloning support.

Their CloudFlare implementation protects and accelerates my websites online. Their web traffic is routed through an intelligent global network to automatically optimize the delivery of faster loading cached web pages. Their network will also block threats and limit abusive bots and crawlers from wasting your bandwidth and server resources.

Elief service is exceptionally efficient.

Well-settled

My OCP site has been running with Interactive Online for several years and has worked fine.  Like Elief above they run on Linux with Installatron.

Just as an FYI, I recently set up another account with Phi9 because I wanted to try some Windows-based apps and have not been able to get OCP working correctly with them.  So I would add them to any "avoid" lists you have if you want to run OCP.

I just wanted to come back to this thread to say I've been with Arvixe web hosting for just over a year now and things have been pretty smooth. Even on a PersonalClass Pro Linux server account (part of their lowest tier of services), I haven't experienced any prolonged or ongoing issues. There is the very occasional timeout or slow server response, but it is not a daily or weekly problem and not usually a long-lived issue when it does happen. You really have to expect these minor issues on lower tiered shared servers. Their general support queue for support tickets initiated through their support page can get overloaded with support tickets and take a little longer than usual to get a response. If it's a major issue that requires more immediate attention, Arvixe does offer live chat, toll free phone support, and a message forum to get support tickets escalated and looked right away.

The PersonalClass Pro shared hosting tier of service is working well for my smaller sites and as an incubator for my web sites in development. When they start to outgrow the PersonalClass Pro shared hosting, I can add VPS hosting to my account and move the bigger sites to the VPS.

The primary reasons I chose Arvixe over the other web hosts mentioned (Inmotion, Elief, and Interactive Online) were the amount of resources given for the price. In particular, I needed the ability to host more than 10 domains and databases with room to grow, and I needed a minimum of 15GB-20GB of disk space. With a discount coupon, only $134 for 2 years of service was too much of a deal to pass up.

I've praised the good services of eLief on many occasions in the past as a long time satisfied customer, but something went terribly wrong with them in recent months resulting in a total  blackout of communication. There has been no way to get in touch with eLief after they automatically charged my account for the renewal of my yearly subscription, but they didn't follow through with my Domain renewal, leaving me locked out of most of my sites for several days without answering my numerous anxious tickets. Without any explanation the servers were changed, resulting in extremely slow webpage access, and I still can't get through to them.

I have since transferred some of my domains to Arvixe and will slowly attempt to reconstruct my online presence. Right from the start the service at Arvixe was exceptional and competent beyond expectation.

Well, I've been very happy with ocPortal v9 and Arvixe. Although the wait for v10 is killing me without an Alpha/preview available, I will live.

I've been with Arvixe on a shared hosting account for about two years, and I've had very few problems that were brief in nature. I've not really kept track of the uptime, but they have so far been the best and hopefully last shared hosting provider that I will used. I was surprised and quite happy to see they had a community liaison here.

I would say that they are the best bang for your buck on shared hosting, but I think that they could come down on their VPS prices just a bit. This has just been a hobby for me seeing that's about how far I've been pushing it.

Perhaps V10 will be something I can get serious with, and then I would need to upgrade to an Arvixe VPS account.

You might want to bite the bullet and go for a VPS at the least. Especially considering that ocPortal isn't the lightest super-awesome community building tool on the net.

I haven't used any of the ones you asked about so I can't speak on them. I use CyberLynk for my VPS and I've had good service with them. I went with a self-managed VPS so I have to do more of it myself, but that saved me money and I already have teh basic skillsets needed to do so.

If interested though - CyberLynk |

Shared hosting is only good for getting started I'm afraid. Once your site is using a good bit of resources and drawing a good bit of daily traffic, you really need to consider either a VPS or a dedicated server.

Like ocPortal? Want to thank Chris and gang somehow? Then help out in the chat room! It really needs your help! Just open it in a tab everytime you open your web browser, and when you hear a "ding", check it out!

I've been hosting www.warsashassociation.net for six years on an ICDSoft server in Boston. The website features a host of tailored functionality done by Chris Graham and we have 485 members worldwide. During this time the server has been utterly reliable and response times and support have been excellent. The content management functions are very good and easy to use include backup features (auto backups daily); I also backup weekly by downloading to my PC which takes about an hour.
If the price is right for you and technical requirements match your needs ICDSoft is well worth considering.

Honestly, I don't have any experience with Inmotionhosting or Arvixe. According to http://www.threehosts.com/simplescripts/ocportal.html, Bluehost, Hostgator and Godaddy are the most recommended ocPortal hosting providers. You should know most web hosts are compatible with ocPortal and you are not limited to these ones. According to my personal experience, GoldPuma is one of the low cost web hosting services supporting websites powered by ocPortal. They offer cheap monthly web hosting plans that meet the minimum requirements of ocPortal.

Somewhat of a late response, but you can always try Mediast

No issues with running OCP on the domain I have hosted with them.

I know Arvixe is OCPortals recommended host, and don't want to tread on any toes, however this thread has been recently active so I thought i'd chip in.

It may not be ideal for most Ocportal users yet I am Australian and use a nice Aussie based host called Net Virtue. They have servers in most Aussie Capitals and offer a good service.

They aren't the cheapest and I have nothing to compare them to, but they seem well priced, offer good service, use top grade hardware and much more.

Even their basic 2.95/mo shared plan has 24/7 e-mail support, and all other plans include 24/7 phone support too. Off hours Support is actually based in the US, so I know this would be more costly for them, but provides a better result than most cheaper asian countries probably would. They also have live chat support business days from 9am untill around 10pm AEST.

They often have good promotions, such as 50% off plans. I was on a 2 year contract for a plan i think 6 or so a month, and when i asked they allowed me to uopgrade to a 'business' (still shared) server for 50% off for the rest of my contract - what id already paid. This cut the business plan with 45% cpu, 2gb ram, dedi mysql with 1tb bw from 20/mo to under 10/mo until 2016. I think that was a good deal and theyre offer specifically said new customers only yet they still allowed me.

As mentioned in another post they are always willing to assist me with changes to things like modsecurity or htaccess or anything like that, and they do this on the cheapest plans too :)

There is lots of other good things I could say about Net Virtue, However if you are Australian and/or need/want Australian Hosting I think they are a good option.

Thanks for reading :)

Yours Sincerely,
Dylan
