Fan in training

 Hello,
I've just discovered OC Portal on hotscripts, and am VERY impressed by its functionality.

There's a couple of things I'm not clear on after reading the information on this site, aqnd would appreciate answers to the following quesitons:

1. Can an OC Portal  user place their own Adsense Code and banners on the free version, or is the registered version necessary to do this.

2. If a site is initially hosted on OC Portal's servers, can it easily be transferred to my own hosting later? (or vice versa)

Thanks,
Eric G.

Hi Eric,

Can an OC Portal  user place their own Adsense Code and banners on the free version, or is the registered version necessary to do this.

Anybody can do this. There's an option in the configuration for it. Basically you need the banners turned on, but you can specify that ocPortal's banner rotation is never used and that instead your own custom HTML (the Adsense stuff) is always displayed instead.

If a site is initially hosted on OC Portal's servers, can it easily be transferred to my own hosting later? (or vice versa)

The hosting is intended as starter hosting, so you can't import data into it. But you can take data out of it – there's an export feature that will zip up the custom files and an SQL dump, and you can then overlay those onto a copy of ocPortal on another server. It's not easy and we don't really support it, but it's not very hard hard either – we'd answer any questions you had.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
