Well-settled

Custom software or expert system

I don't think there is any magic that ocP offers here but I want to toss this out as maybe someone else has dealt with something like this.

A recent thread in NicaLiving (Cost of exit and entrance | Nicaragua Living) someone asked about the cost of crossing the border from Nicaragua to Costa Rica. This is a typical question with no simple answer. That is, there are lots of factors that influence the answer including country of legal residency, type of Nicaragua visa you have, nationality, how you are crossing (on foot, bus, your own car, …) and more. I started to write up an explanation but realized that it will just be information overload for people reading it.

My solution would be to put up a form with a whole bunch of questions and then return just the answer that fits. If I had 100 items like this I would just set up an expert system somewhere but this is about the only one I can think of. I can write the code but the more integrated the solution is, the better. For example, putting the various pieces for an answer in CEDI so it could be updated using normal ocP features would beCost of exit and entrance | Nicaragua Living a good thing.

Before I just off and invent something, I am wondering of anyone else has needed to do something like this and, if so, how they did it (or didn't do it  O_o ).

Hi, no quite new. You won't find many people here talking about code yet (unfortunately), but ocPortal is very easy to extend. Minimodules for example are basically pure PHP, but with access to the ocPortal API.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
