One thing I find missing in ocPortal is the ability for users to start with a complete listing of objects and filter down the results for their own purposes. Something like this would be very useful in both main_gallery_embed and main_cc_embed. This feature is fairly common in many different software and I think  it is something that really needs to be implemented in ocPortal.

For anyone not clear about what I am talking about, consider that the member gets a page with hundreds of paintings on it but is then able to narrow the results by selecting only nudes between a beginning and ending year.

Have the developers ever considered implementing such a feature?

It is possible to embed the search page screens like a block, using main_include_module.

But generally I would agree there is plenty of scope for improving main_multi_content, unifying all the blocks and filtering in there in a consistent way.

It's all much easier said than done though.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Yeah, I figured it would take a lot of work. Perhaps something I will pursue next year.

I do think it's an important feature not only because so much other software has it available but because it greatly enhances usability.
