I receive this error when registering new users: A system e-mail could not be sent. This error may be preventing staff e-mail notifications, so please contact the staff manually to inform them of the problem.

Having looked through the forums the only reference to this error i could find is from 2012 for an older version, though its possibly the same issue. Is there a fix for this problem, currently it's impossible to sign up for my website without seeing this error. (there are no error logs for it under audit)

Thanks

You may want to contact your webhost about this. PHP should be able to send emails out-of-the-box and this error only tends to happen when it is misconfigured. Particular on Windows machines, as it requires some explicit configuration on Windows in php.ini.

If you can't get PHP mail working, you can bypass it – look into filling in the SMTP options in the configuration.

I have a 9.0.6. install of another site, same shared enviorment and it can send e-mail just fine.

As an alternative to the SMTP system, would the bettermail be a option to use? Also is the 9.0.0 ver compatible with the 9.0.7 release?

In which case, it would be interesting to know if there any differences in the email settings. But essentially this error comes from PHP, which may be relaying it from the email software on the server, or failing to communicate with that software somehow.

The bettermail addon will still use SMTP, it's just mainly that our own implementation doesn't support SSL which is needed if you use gmail as the outgoing server which can be very useful sometimes. I'm not aware of another major use case for it, but there probably are some.
